industry in both enacted legislation and the shaping of public perception. Last May, FIC concluded hearings on the proposed Tariff No: 6 which could cost Canadian fitness clubs $18.59 per member per year for the use of copyrighted music retroactive to January 2008. A significant defense coordinated by FIC over several years remains our best bet for a more equitable rate structure.
Most major industries in Canada support a national trade association, so it is
surprising that prior to 2005 none existed for fitness club operators. Trade associations connect independent business operators, help set standards and best practices, and can move their respective industries forward as a whole. If you’re a club owner or operator make sure you have a voice, and support your industry association by becoming an FIC member. In this issue we present our “2012 Canadian Product and Service Directory” (page
28). All companies listed in the directory are committed to serving the Canadian health and fitness industry. Check out the supplier directory section for detailed profiles of many of the listed companies. The directory is also online at our website
