advantage of dumbbells and barbells is that the exercise options and varia- tions are virtually limitless. “One of the common reasons peo-
ple quit exercising is because they get bored doing the same routine day after day,” he says. “With free weights you can regularly make changes to keep an exercise routine fresh and engaging.” Ironically, this advantage can also
be a disadvantage. Beginners are sometimes stumped for ideas when they look at a barbell or pair of dumb- bells, and so they often stick with stan- dards like biceps curls, triceps kick- backs and overhead presses. That is, once again, where the expertise of the personal trainer comes in. Arnold notes that there may be a
slightly higher risk for injuries using free weights when compared to using machines. For example, there’s a great- er chance of falling while doing walk- ing lunges than doing seated leg press- es. On a leg press machine it’s hard to do the exercise incorrectly – but the

downside is that it can be used for just one exercise. When it comes to his own workouts,
Arnold likes to include as much vari- ety as possible. Though the University of Saskatchewan Fit Centre has an impressive selection of machines and free weights, he leans toward free weights largely for the core workout benefits.
