The Olender Awards
Attorney Jack Olender’s 20th Annual Awards affair was celebrated last December. The Founda- tion celebrated twenty fantastic years of recognizing individuals whose public service transformed and reshaped American society. Among those honored were Congressman John Lewis, the last living member of the “Big Six” of the Civil Rights Movement, who received the Olender Foundation’s Advocate for Justice 2006 Award. Mr. Olender applauded Lewis’ stamina, along with his resilience, in the midst of one of the most violent periods in American history. In Congressman Lewis’ honor, an Olender Foundation grant was awarded to the Luke C. Moore Academy. Another honoree, Joshua Basile, a Potomac, Maryland teen paralyzed by a beach accident suffered when he was 19 years old, was named recipient of the Olender Foundation’s America’s Role Model 2006 Award for his courage in the aftermath of the devastating incident. Joshua formed a founda- tion, Determined2Heal, to serve persons with spinal cord injuries and their loved ones. The Olender Foundation provided a grant in Joshua’s honor to the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at Kennedy Krieger Institute.
