T
he KAW Gallery was started on a whim and a prayer in November 2009, by artists Pete Gottschalk and Charles Goings. With a collection of original art and big ideas, it
has continued to grow and attract outstanding local talent. After be- ing offered a fantastic space in perhaps one of the most iconic retail settings in Naples, the Hibiscus Center, the founders decided to cre- ate a venue for local artists and a cultural center for “outside the box thinkers”. The Hibiscus Center, located at 2950 Tamiami Trail North, is a brightly colored art deco building containing 30,000 square feet of retail and office space. It’s currently home to Zazou, Salon Zenergy, Tamiami Cigar Bar, and the Parkinson’s Foundation. The original concept was to create something related to art that
would invigorate and attract people to the Hibiscus Center. What started as a veritable blank slate has resulted in a gathering of tal- ent consisting of painters, photographers, furniture makers, potters, sculptors, graphic artists, jewelry and clothing designers. The paint- ings range from the abstract and surreal to fauvism, impressionism, pop art, Asian inspired, contemporary and outdoor art. Complement- ing the new creations is a collection of lithographs, antiques and un- usual items collected from around the world. If you stop by during the day, you will often find Joseph Swenarton painting one of his beautiful landscapes in the front window. There’s also the collective works of Charles Goings, whose art takes on many different shapes and styles, from exquisite retro-modern wood furni- ture to sculptures, paintings, and even jewelry. Says Goings about his work, "It's an experience of touch and relation, not just visual."
The KAW Gallery boasts a large open area that is used for hosting guided meditations, psychic medium workshops, classes in Yoga, Qi- gong, painting and art instruction, music, dancing and other applied sciences. The Gallery is interested in fostering business development by encouraging each artist to create a body of salable works, develop a marketing plan, host educational classes, share overhead, and estab- lish relationships within the art world to provide maximum exposure for their art in multiple markets. In addition, the artists are encour- aged to help market the artwork of others with a commission struc- ture designed to compensate them for their efforts. “We feel that we are really on to something very special and im- portant here,” states KAW Gallery founder Peter Gottschalk. “When people walk through the door, they sense a positive energy that is con- tagious and it is usually the first comment we hear. We’ve asked each artist to take a proactive role in promotion by treating their art as a business instead of a hobby. We’re developing a business model that is sustainable in a negative market and one poised to explode as the general economic climate rebounds.” A visit to KAW Gallery will always give one a true art experience
and is a feast for the senses. To learn more, view class schedules and a calendar of upcoming events, please visit:
