Eardley Escarpment The most prominent geographical feature of

Gatineau Park, the Eardley Escarpment, towers 300 m/ yd above the Ottawa River Valley and stretches like a defensive wall facing the housing developments of the city of Gatineau. This volcanic rock face is a southern extension of the Canadian Shield and during the last ice age, formed the northern boundary of the great Champlain Sea, which covered most of eastern Ontario. The top of the escarpment affords magnificent views

of the Ottawa Valley, and the many trails and lookouts found there are among Gatineau Park’sbusiest, especially during the fall when the hardwoods that cover its slopeschange colour.
