LADIES ON THE GREEN

By Jacquelyn Vaughn “Ladies on the Green” is

a golf related series of col- umns highlighting the many accomplishments of Michi- gan women who take to the course, dedicated to the rigor of the game and the camara- derie of the greens.

Whether you play for sport,

networking or leisure, this column will provide you with local league information, playing tips, current tourna- ment updates and advice from winning experts.

As a board member of

the Executive Women Golf- ers Association (EWGA), and member of the Oakland County Ladies Golf League and Tee Set Golf Club, I have had the privilege of competing in golf tournaments locally, nationally, and internation- ally receiving many awards.

I look forward to sharing those experiences with you.

Practice, prac- tice, practice!

If you are a golfer you are

always trying to get better. With so many intricacies in the game it’s easy to get over- whelmed trying to master every aspect at once.

If you have ever watched

professional golfers, you’ve noticed that some are great putters, while others are strong drivers, and the leg- ends of course, are known for their all-around game.

The worst year I’ve had in

golf was the year I had three different professionals teach- ing me at the same time. All the variety made it impossible to focus and perfect one tech- nique.

Vince Lombardi once said

“Practice does not make per- fect, perfect practice makes perfect.”

Going to the golf dome or

the range to hit balls, does not guarantee you will be better at the game.

You should be as inten-

tional about your practice sessions as you are about the game.

Showing up early for your

tee times to warm up, to prac- tice chipping, putting or get-

Keep in mind that everyone

plays differently and don’t be discouraged if you can’t hit the ball exactly like someone else, but don’t overlook the lessons.

Yes, practice is good but it

is only as good as you make it. Practice the proper fundamen- tals of the game and you will score big.

Hope to see you ladies soon

ting familiar with the course are good habits of preparation that will improve your game.

It’s good to seek profession-

al help, but before you commit to someone you should find out their specialty and match that with your needs.

Ask yourself where do you

need the most improvement, be it your short game, long game, overall game, mental focus, your swing or simple alignment.

Be sure you become famil-

iar with execution phrases and terms such as “swing through the ball,” “completed swing,” “stand square to the target,” and “cock your wrist,” to name a few.

While practicing by your-

self, keep in mind that you may be practicing the wrong technique in swinging your club. Many people go to the range to hit 50 or 100 balls using every club in their bag.

A friend of mine once told

me never practice every tech- nique or with every club in one day, but, rather, focus on a certain aspect of the game so that I could monitor my im- provement as time went on.

Consider your learning

style as well. If you are more of a visual learner, invest in instructional videos or spend time watching the golf chan- nel.

Play with people who are

better players than you are so that you can observe some of their techniques.

More calls to the Michigan Tobac- co Quit Line

Three weeks after the

smoke-free law took effect, the Michigan Tobacco Quit Line is already seeing an impact. More calls are coming into the state’s Quit Line from smok- ers who are motivated to kick the habit because of the new law.

“We have seen a 20 percent

increase in calls since April 26,” said Karen Brown, tobac- co use treatment specialist for the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH).

For Michigan residents who

are ready to quit smoking, the MDCH Tobacco Quit Line, 1- (800) QUIT-NOW (784-8669), continues to provide free in- formation and referrals.
