There are so many “rainy
days” that people can experi- ence — a sick child, a broken- down car, a late mortgage pay- ment.
But what about a lawsuit? These days lawsuits are
being filed not just against big corporations, but also against people like you and me. In the blink of an eye, you could be involved in a car or boat- ing accident, or have some- one become injured on your property that could result in litigation against you seeking thousands or even millions of dollars.
Even though your primary
insurance policies, such as auto, homeowners, boatown- ers, etc., may provide substan- tial liability insurance cover- age, it may not be enough. A Personal Liability Umbrella Policy provides additional amounts of liability coverage at an affordable price.
A Personal Liability Umbrel-
la Policy provides additional layers of liability coverage over the liability coverage of your underlying policies. Personal umbrella coverage amounts typically begin at $1 million and can be increased in incre-

ments of one million. Here’s an example of how an
umbrella policy could work: Let’s say your car is in-
sured for liability with limits of $250,000 per person. You pull into an intersection, strike another vehicle and severely injure the other driver. This in- sured person sues you and the judgment against you totals $800,000. Your auto policy will pay the first $250,000, but an umbrella policy would re- spond for the next $550,000.
Also, an umbrella policy
often insures against some types of losses for which there is no coverage in the underly- ing policy. Examples of such

loss include libel, slander and defamation of character.
Why have an umbrella
policy? The value of a personal li-
ability umbrella policy is to provide higher amounts of li- ability coverage for an afford- able premium. It can help protect the financial assets of your household when you need it most and can bring confidence knowing that you have the coverage needed to help protect your family.
To see if this is a policy that
can benefit you, talk to your insurance agent.
Volunteers needed for stewardship workdays in Southeast Michigan
The Department of Natu-
ral Resources and Environ- ment recently announced the schedule of volunteer steward- ship workdays to be held this month at various southeast Michigan state parks and rec- reation areas.
Volunteers are needed to
help hand-pull garlic mustard, an invasive non-native plant, at several parks. This activity will help protect and restore the unique natural areas in these parks.
Volunteering for these
workdays is a great way to “GO-Get Outdoors” and enjoy the wonderful, warm spring air.
Dates, times and locations
of the workdays are as fol- lows:
• Saturday, April 17, Brighton Recreation Area (Living ston County), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• Saturday, April 17, Sterling State Park (Monroe County), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• Sunday, April 18, Pinckney Recreation Area (Washtenaw County), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• Saturday, April 24, Waterloo Recreation Area (Washtenaw County), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• Sunday, April 25, Highland Recreation Area (Oakland County), 1 to 4 p.m.
Volunteers should bring ap-
propriate clothing for outdoor work, including long pants,
boots, gloves, eye protection and drinking water.
For information about the
specific tasks at each location and to obtain directions, visit the DNRE website at www. michigan.gov/dnrvolunteers, and link to the “Calendar of Volunteer Stewardship Work- days.”
All volunteers are asked to
register using the form avail- able on the website.
