Fifth Third Bank’s 2010 American Heart Association Heart Walk Campaign

In January, Fifth Third

Bank kicked off its sixth annual fundraising campaign for the American Heart Asso- ciation Heart Walk. The cam- paign raises awareness and funds for critical research, ed- ucation and advocacy efforts to help build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Through START!, a national cause campaign that encourages a culture of physical activity and wellness in order to live longer heart healthy lives, the AHA plans to reach more than 20,000 people in the southeastern Michigan community this year.

Diane Jackson, vice presi-

dent and team lead at Fifth Third Bank, has been the com- pany lead for the AHA for the last two years and has led the way by soliciting passionate individuals to become team captains. In nine weeks Diane and her 14 team captains have recruited 86 friends, family and coworkers to become fundraising walkers.

So far, they have collected

over $21,000 in pledges and donations through team fund- raising campaigns and corpo- rate fundraisers. The bank kicked in a $10,000 sponsor- ship to help reach this year’s goal. Should the bank reach its 2010 goal of $53,000 it will have outpaced last year’s total of $18,651 by more than $34,000.

Diane has served as a team

captain for the annual AHA Heart Walk Campaign for four of the past six years and is cur- rently a member of the 2010 Executive Leadership Team of the American Heart As- sociation. This year she has expanded her vision of height- ening awareness and heart health education by incor-

porating a wellness strategy within the culture of the bank and has taken the necessary steps to turn Fifth Third into a Fit Friendly Company in ad- dition to fundraising.

Tina Szegda, executive as-

sistant, has been named the Wellness Strategy Leader at the Bank and said, “I’m excit- ed to be a part of Fifth Third’s Wellness Strategy for our employees. Staying fit and healthy is a passion of mine and I love it when people stop me to talk about it. Being fit saves the company money and lowers your health care costs. Those are the more obvious reasons for the program. But it makes you feel good and it definitely enhances your quality of life, stabilizes your mood. The benefits are end- less and they far outweigh the cost.

Promoting a wellness culture

The annual Heart Walk campaign is personal for

Tyler Perry

“Tyler Perry’s story is a

miracle of sorts, to go from growing up in a dysfunctional home, living in his car to being worth billions. I’ve been with him in Atlanta on his studio lot, and he says and I agree, ‘This could be nothing but God.’”

The Platinum Gala will

also feature entertainment by Grammy nominated singer Kim Burrell.

Fifth Third Bank is proud

to be a Platinum sponsor of the gala. The proceeds from the gala will go to the Perfect- ing Community Development Corporation, a powerful and effective Detroit based non- profit organization. Efforts of the Perfecting Community Development Corporation in- clude the Amelia Agnes Tran- sitional Home for Women, and the Perfecting Community Care Center which provides free food and clothing for the less fortunate. The organiza- tion also provides job train- ing, financial literacy classes and partners with other com- munity organizations such as THAW and United Way.

Diane. Outside of her corpo- rate role, she has personally raised funds for the American Heart Association for more than six years in memory of her mother who passed away from cardiovascular disease 14 years ago.

Incorporating a culture of

healthy living has become even important to Diane after the sudden death of a former Fifth Third employee, Brenda Stanley, at age 44 last year from complications of unde- tected heart disease. Another employee suffered a stroke, 31 years of age and senior vice president and affiliate man- ager of the mortgage division, Anthony Weekly had a heart attack at age 41 last June.

This year’s fundraising ef-

forts have sparked friendly competition amount bank em- ployees and have increased employee engagement. It has also highlighted the creativ- ity and talents of a few Fifth Third employees. Fundrais- ing activities have included the sale of special edition Red 5/3 lapel pins, “Go Red” dress pins, and green “Start!” pins, beaded lanyards, Valen- tine candy flowers and candy bags, bake sales, a media sale, a Heart Healthy Chili Cookoff and, heart and Easter themed chocolate covered pretzels.

nizes the women whose busi- ness acumen, professional in- tegrity and personal tenacity are fostering great leadership in financial services and there- by strengthening America’s social and economic fabric.

U.S. Banker’s ranking is

considered by industry play- ers to be an unparalleled indi- cator of outstanding achieve- ment and influence among women executives. In 2006, the magazine considered 5,100 women before arriving at its ‘Who’s Who of Influence’ list, which also recognizes The 25 Women to Watch and the Top 3 Banking Teams. The per- formance of these individuals reflects how their progressive leadership and inclusive man- agement styles are making an impact on their institutions’ top and bottom lines and open- ing doors for others to acquire the tools for top performance at their institutions.
