Vegetarian tastefest and expo celebrates plant-based diet for health and planet
No. 1 New York Times best-

The event features food
from local restaurants, lec- tures, cooking and raw food demonstrations, exhibitors, free samples, door prizes, children’s entertainment and more, all designed to promote the health, environmental and ethical benefits of a plant- based diet.
VegFest also serves as the
kickoff event for Ferndale Green Week activities.
Major sponsors include
Whole Foods Market, 93.9 FM The River, Natural Awak- enings magazine, the Physi- cians Committee for Respon- sible Medicine, Meijer and the Medicine Cabinet Pharmacy, with free biofuel shuttle ser- vice provided by The Night Move and free bike corral and lockup courtesy of KLM Bike & Fitness.
Keynote speaker Rory
Freedman is expected to draw fans of her best-selling “Skinny B----” series.
As Freedman tells it in
her book, she was always obsessed with food, but she wasn’t always a healthy eater. When she did eventually change her ways, she experi- enced the difference a healthy, plant-based diet could make. The more she learned for her- self, the more she wanted to share her knowledge and help others.
With two million copies in
print and translations in 27 languages, the book, with co-
ther eats nor uses any animal products — and he passion- ately believes that his diet choice improved his game and his life.
VegFest offers something
for everyone, from vegans to raw foodies to meat eaters just trying to eat less meat. At- tendees can enjoy tasty vegan cuisine from two dozen local restaurants, national brand samples, cooking and raw- food demonstrations, door prizes, children’s activities plus several lectures and pre- sentations.
In addition to Rory Freed-
John Salley
author Kim Barnouin, sparked a worldwide movement. It’s a no-nonsense wake-up call that exposes the problems with the food industry while inspiring people to eat well and enjoy food.
Since “Skinny B----” came
out, four others in the series have followed.
Voted VegNews magazine’s
first-ever “Person of the Year,” Freedman has counseled models, actors, athletes and other professionals using the “Skinny B----” method.
And back this year by pop-
ular demand, after drawing a record-breaking crowd of nearly 2000 to last year’s Veg- Fest, is NBA champion and TV personality John Salley.
He helped lead the Detroit
Pistons, Chicago Bulls and L.A. Lakers to NBA champion- ships before retiring to host the Emmy-nominated “Best Damn Sports Show, Period” on Fox Sports Net and has since appeared in a number of films and TV shows.
Like Freedman, he also is vegan — meaning he nei-
Michigan chapter of the American Immigration
The Michigan chapter of the
American Immigration Law- yers Association (MI-AILA) will present Citizenship Day 2010, a workshop providing assis- tance to non-U.S. citizen state residents eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship. The event is taking place on Sunday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois, in Troy.
“Each year, hundreds of
thousands of immigrants, from all corners of the globe em- brace the ideals of freedom and democracy and become U.S. citizens,” said Scott Cooper, event coordinator. “While the process to become a legal citi- zen has been greatly improved by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, many applicants need assis- tance to recognize whether they are eligible to apply for citizenship, as well as to pre- pare the application required of prospective U.S. citizens. That is why we have this as- sistance event.”
This year, in an effort to streamline the application
Lawyers Association to hold Citizenship Day
process, the MI-AILA is con- ducting a prescreening proce- dure by phone. The MI-AILA is asking prospective applicants to call (313) 638-2249 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. While pre- screened individuals will be given appointments and pri- ority, walk-in applicants to the workshop will also be ac- cepted.
Applicants are charged $20
to cover costs of the program. Those whose cases require referral to an immigration
specialist attorney outside of the program may be charged a fee.

PISCES
One of your most unique gifts is the power to change your mind. You know how to change the way you think, and it gives you great personal magnetism. This week you may be called upon to change the way you think about a person close to you. Do it. Also, it is possi- ble that someone you have not seen in a long time will sud- denly appear. It may be in old schoolmate, or maybe a favor- ite teacher.
Soul Affirmation: Friendships are shock absorbers on the bumpy roads of life.

Soul Affirmation: This week I forgive myself.
Lucky Numbers: 3, 4, 10
Focus intently on the per- sonal this week. Others may seem scattered or impersonal, but it’s not about you. Keep your thoughts and feelings to yourself until others are more receptive to your good vibra- tions. This is also a good week to begin doing the things that will improve your health. This includes eating better foods, getting an ample amount of sleep, drinking plenty of water and, yes, excercising — even when you do not feel like it.
Soul Affirmation: I master fear by knowing that all is well. Fear, after all, is “false evidence appearing real. Keep that in mind and by midweek you will be glad you did.
