George Washington Carver Academy robotics team needs help

The George Washington

Carver Academy Vex Robotics Team of Highland Park is in need of financial assistance to participate in the Vex Ro- botics World Championship Competition in Dallas, April 21-24. The Vex Robotics Tour- naments are designed to intro- duce students to sound engi- neering practices. The GWCA Middle School Robotics Team has successfully competed with college and high school teams over the past few years. The students won the Vex Ro- botics Middle School National Championship in Omaha, March 18-20. The team also captured three additional na- tional awards in the Omaha competition.

In the Vex Robotics Cham-

pionship of the Americas in Nebraska, the students were in competition against the top 40 robotics teams in the United States. The World Champion- ship in Dallas April 21-24 will have 300 teams from 16 differ- ent countries (Japan, China, France, Brazil, Korea, Germa- ny and Italy, to name a few), in this exciting global competi- tion.

To make the trip to Dallas,

the GWCA team must raise money in a very short time. The team needs a total of $5,000 to pay for transportation, lodging and transfer of equipment to participate in this world class championship event.

George Washington Carver Academy students and par-

ents will have bake sales with hot dogs, hamburgers, pop and potato chips to raise money, but these fundraisers will not be enough to cover the cost of the trip. The students are also reaching out to friends, family and communities for support. Whatever amount you are able to give will be greatly appreci- ated. The students especially need community and business support to show that Michigan students are among the best and brightest in the world.

Thank you for your consid-

eration of our request. Please make all checks or money orders payable to the GWCA Robotics Team, First Indepen- dence Bank, 44 Michigan Ave., Detroit, MI, 48226.

‘I Am Apart of History’

By Johnnie Washington

The first annual Charles H.

Wright Vision Awards Dinner and Concert will be held on Saturday, April 17, to honor the vision and legacy of Dr. Charles H. Wright, visionary behind the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

The inaugural dinner and

concert will honor local com- munity leaders who shared the vision of the creation of

the museum with Dr. Wright and helped to keep the vision alive. Heaster Wheeler, execu- tive director, Detroit Branch NAACP, will serve as the guest speaker. The concert will be headlined by jazz artist Marion Meadows.

In addition to the dinner

and concert there will be an unveiling of an original art- work created by Adeobye. The artwork is representative of the theme “I Am Apart of His- tory.”

Both the dinner and the

concert serve as a fundraiser for the museum. The dinner and the concert are just the first in a series of events. The second phase of “I Am Apart of History” is a potential partner- ship and fundraiser for Detroit Public Schools as well. Phase II of the project will allow in- dividuals and corporations to adopt a school and create a pride wall in the school with the commissioned art work and also provide membership to the adopted schools.

Poetic Reflections

‘The Journey’

I’m steady trying to live out this fantasy So I’m too zoned out to accept my reality. Blinded by false perceptions of beauty, I’m turning into someone I don’t recognize, I’m trying to find the old me. But I’m tired of my past, Wait, I don’t think I’m ready. Always contradicting myself like yes, no, maybe, One day I’ll be who I’m des- tined to be One this never-ending jour- ney. In the meantime I’ll just coast to the top, kick flip, maybe ollie. I don’t listen to the testers; they just want to “try me.” ‘Cuz mentally I’m 21 & up, No, they don’t check my ID. Evidently I was born with wisdom Like in my past life I was Gandhi. Mary sang “if heaven was a mile away” Then I would run to my glory. People know right from wrong but they sin away,

How long are they trying to stay in purga- tory? ‘Cuz here in America we wor- ship those fake idols, No Simon, Paula,

R.I.P. Randy. But I don’t follow the trend I do what’s right, not what’s most likely.

I can’t help that I was born to lead naturally, Most people flick on the TV and mimic what they see. But nobody can tell me who I’m supposed to be, I just pick up a mic and check it: 1, 2, 3. So when you look to others, I look to myself Meaning: I inspire me.
