The Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) Division of Biostatistics is
soliciting applications for a Visiting Scientist for a period of up to 12 months beginning in 2008. CBER is responsible for the
safety and efficacy of vaccines, the blood supply and blood products, and cellular, tissue and gene therapies that have a major
impact on public health. As a Visiting Scientist with expertise in biostatistics you may contribute to the review and evaluation
of clinical studies or use your skills to conduct research on specific statistical issues and challenges for biologic products. The
ideal candidate may be seeking a sabbatical opportunity and should have a track record of collaborative research, demon-
strated ability in the design and analysis of clinical trials, and good written and oral communication skills.
As a Visiting Scientist you will interact with a team of 20 biostatisticians who are dedicated to the public health and upholding
the highest scientific standards in research into new biological therapies and vaccines. You will have the chance to work with
FDA reviewers and scientists, as well as scientists in industry, other government agencies and academia. There will be ample
opportunity for the candidate to attend and participate in meetings and workshops focusing on methods and policies for
design and evaluation of clinical studies or pre-clinical studies/laboratory experiments such as bioassays. CBER statisticians
conduct research, evaluate study designs, and collaborate with medical colleagues and laboratory scientists on the develop-
ment of scientific and regulatory policy, and frequently have the opportunity to represent CBER in collaborations with outside
groups.
Qualifications
A degree that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in math-
ematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.
Or
A combination of education and experience at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12
hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Candidates may also be hired under Title 42 or Visiting Scientist
Title 42 209(g) Staff Fellow positions candidates must possess a Ph. D or equivalent degree plus two or more years of post-
doctoral health related research/regulatory review experience. Applicants for permanent positions must hold U.S. citizen-
ship. Non-U.S. Citizens with permanent residency are required to provide proof with Green Card I-551.
Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) is another opportunity for someone taking six months to a year sabbatical from
their current position to work with the FDA and collaborate with our CBER statisticians.
Salary Range
Depending on qualifications and experience, the salary at the GS-14/15 ($97,093.00-$148,477.00)
