Greek Statistical Institute
GSI Serves Members with
News, Conferences, Awards
T
he Greek Statistical Institute, which is
the national association for Greek
statisticians, was founded in 1981
through the efforts of Theofilos Cacoullos of
the University of Athens, who served as the
first president of GSI. The institute has
approximately 500 members who serve to
advance the statistical profession in Greece;
improve statistical education at all levels; and
promote excellence in statistical practice,
applications, and research. It is an affiliated
organization of the International Statistical
Institute, involved in organizing statistical
seminars for bringing together statistical aca-
demicians and practitioners and leading the
efforts for the establishment of a universally
accepted Greek statistical terminology.
GSI regularly publishes Statistical Periscope
(SP), an e-newsletter that includes mem-
ber news, conference announcements, and
other topics of interest to Greek statisticians.
A view of the audience during the opening ceremony
Motivated by biographies appearing fre-
quently in international statistical journals
and bulletins, SP also publishes interviews
with influential Greek statisticians.
GSI tries to encourage young people in
their initial attempts toward developing a
“stochastic profile.” As part of this effort,
the institute is affiliated with GRSTATS, a
Greek statistics web site at http://stat-athens.
aueb.gr/~grstats, where useful job infor-
mation is available, among other services.
There also are several awards presented by
GSI, including the following:
Myrto Lefkopoulou Best Doctoral Thesis
Award: This award, presented every other
year during the opening ceremony of
the GSI annual conference to the best
doctoral thesis in statistics (preferably in
biostatistics), is dedicated to the memory of
Greek biostatistician Myrto Lefkopoulou,
a faculty member and graduate of Harvard
School of Public Health who died of cancer
Eleni Mavrou, mayor of Nicosia (second from left), with GSI members Tasos Christofides, Nikos
in 1992 at the age of 34.
