World News VivaColombia serves Miami
In late 2015, international low-cost carrier VivaColombia launched flights between Miami and Medellin, Colombia – its first service in the US. The budget carrier has already followed this up with a Miami- Bogota service. Both flights operate four times a week and use a 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.
VivaColombia already serves 11 cities in Colombia and three other destinations in Latin America. It is Colombia’s second-
largest airline, the nation’s leading budget carrier and Miami’s sixth international low-cost carrier.
“With nearly 1.3 million passengers annually, Colombia is our second-busiest international market and we look forward to serving more travellers on these popular routes with VivaColombia,” said Emilio T. Gonzalez, director and CEO of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.
Iberia
returns to Puerto Rico
Spanish carrier Iberia is resuming flights to Puerto Rico from its hub in Madrid. The start date of May 15, 2016 will allow Iberia to operate the route using a state-of-the-art Airbus A330-200.
Vancouver’s strategic expansion
Air Canada will fly non-stop to Dublin for the 2016 summer season, starting on June 10. It is the latest of several new routes from Vancouver, including new transborder services to Chicago, San Jose and San Diego, double daily flights to London Heathrow, and the only flights linking Canada to Brisbane, Australia. The Dublin-Vancouver flights will be operated three times weekly by Air Canada’s leisure airline, rouge, with Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.
“This route is a great, convenient option for Western Canadians travelling to visit the vibrant Emerald Isle with its rich literary history, arts, world-class golf and dramatic landscapes,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada president, passenger airlines. “It will also be equally appealing for our customers from Ireland flying non-stop to visit and experience the spectacular attractions Vancouver and British Columbia offer.

The route – being flown three times a week – will help to consolidate Iberia’s position in the region and offer Puerto Rican travellers good connections with the airline’s 52-strong European network. Alejandro Garcia Padilla, Puerto Rico’s governor, said: “Iberia is back, and in a big way. It is opening a door for Puerto Ricans. Likewise, Iberia’s return, along with the flights by other European airlines to our market, will bring unprecedented numbers of passengers from Europe to Puerto Rico each week.”
“Air Canada is further strengthening
Vancouver as a strategic and important international gateway, connecting our extensive British Columbia, Western Canada and growing US network with our expanding South Pacific, Asian and European network.” In summer 2016, Air Canada will also be
launching Montreal-Casablanca, Montreal- Lyon, Toronto-Prague, Toronto-Budapest, Toronto-Glasgow, Toronto-London Gatwick, Toronto-Warsaw and Toronto-Seoul.
Luis Gallego, Iberia’s chairman and CEO, said the airline promised to return to Puerto Rico as soon as it was able to make the route economically sustainable. “All the changes made in the company in recent months have enabled us not only to restore these routes but to open up five new destinations in Latin America – Havana, Cali, Medellin, Montevideo and Santo Domingo,” he said.
