Events essentials Meet the team
Phil McLoughlin is Routes’ newly appointed head of commercial.
What are your immediate priorities for Routes? The top thing on the list is dealing with the first three events, Routes Americas 2016, Routes Asia 2016 and Routes Europe 2016, which are taking place in the next three months.
They are all in really great locations with excellent partners, so I am looking forward to getting out there and seeing them happen first hand.
Of course, I will be working hard to ensure they are a success, and we need to ensure expectations are met and the experience is a good one for both the exhibitors and attendees. In particular I shall be making sure the return on investment is there so that every delegate finds the events worthwhile.
For World Routes 2016, we also have a great location in Chengdu in China, and that will come round quickly, so of course that is on the radar too. I’ve also got a great deal of digital experience and I have been brought in to grow that side of the business too. It isn’t just an events business; there are other platforms we provide for customers to promote themselves and I’ve got to make sure customers are aware of all these different opportunities.
As someone who is new to the aviation and route development industry, what are you most looking forward to working on? I have a predominantly media background where there have been

some tough times in the UK, so joining an industry where it is growing so much is very exciting.
There are three core areas where I want to deliver, and those are customer experience and engagement, return on investment, and the online aspect of our business.
Also, an increasing number of suppliers outside airlines and airports want to be involved in Routes events, and I am excited about developing that. In particular, tourism boards are beginning to understand the importance of route development and airports need to work with them to fully engage the airlines to persuade them to put in new routes.
This will give us new customers but they will not be my only focus. As a business we need to engage with
our current customers and continue developing our model to make sure we continue to deliver.
I am looking forward to getting out to the Routes events and engaging with the delegates to really understand what they want and need from us and I hope to build a team that delivers just that.
What do you see as the biggest opportunities for 2016?
Aviation is still facing massive amounts of growth across the board and there are some regions where this is particularly true. Both the US and Asia are looking very exciting as two regions that show particular opportunities for growth, but at Routes we will not take our eyes off the rest of the world.
