Sales boom for Europe’s plastics machinery fi rms
Europe’s two leading plastics machinery producing countries – Germany and Italy – saw healthy sales in 2015, and expect similar results this year. Sales of German machinery
grew by 5% in 2015, which exceeded an earlier forecast of 4% growth. “We now believe the trend will continue at the same high level in the year ahead, and expect sales this year to top €7bn for the fi rst time,” said Ulrich Reifenhäu- ser, chairman of the VDMA trade association’s plastics and rubber sector. While domestic orders declined by 10%, orders from outside of Germany rose by 11%. Thorsten Kühmann, VDMA’s Managing Director Plastics and Rubber, said: “The export trend is dominated by deliveries to the countries of the EU, especially in the four biggest markets – Poland, Italy, Great Britain and France.” Deliveries to Russia
weakened, although those to the Americas rose. Exports to Asia were mixed; while there

was a drop in deliveries to China, Japan and Taiwan there was growth in India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. VDMA is also expecting a boost in exports to Iran following the relaxing of economic sanc- tions. Sales of Italian plastics and rubber machinery industry also recorded an increase. The Assocomaplast trade associa- tion reported healthy imports and exports for the fi rst nine month of 2015. “The factor bringing most satisfaction to
Italian businesses in this sector is the consolidation in exports,” said Alessandro Grassi, president of Assoco- maplast. “In the fi rst nine months of this year they reached nearly the same level as the full year 2014.” Assocomaplast estimates that 2015 may break the all-time export record reached in 2007 of €2.8bn. This may push total sales beyond €4.1bn, Grassi said. Exports to Germany showed
a clear recovery compared to previous quarters, confi rming it as the main destination market for Italian exports in the sector. Exports to EU countries as a whole rose 13%, but fell 4% to non-EU Euro- pean countries, largely infl uenced by lower sales to Russia.
North America performed
strongly. However, sales to South America – especially the principal markets of Brazil, Argentina and Colombia – de- clined.
