BASF has added new food contact grades to its Elastollan portfolio of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs). Suitable for injection moulding and extrusion applications, the new Elastollan FC grades comply with both FDA and EU regulations governing food contact applications and are manufactured in accordance with GMP (Guidance for Good Manufacturing Practice, 2023/2006/EC). The new grades are the
latest additions to BASF’s food contact polymer portfolio. The company already offers a special food contact PBT – Ultradur B 1520 FC – for food applica- tions such as coffee capsules and food packaging. ❙

Airbus Helicopters has replaced aluminium in a bracket used on the doors of the Airbus A350-900 wide body airliner with a carbon rein- forced grade of PEEK polymer from Victrex, reducing weight and cost by around 40%. The fibre-reinforced
polymer structure of the A350’s aircraft door uses an outer skin coupled with an internal bracing structure. The injection-moulded polymer bracket connects the outer skin to points on the internal

structure to form a box-type support structure. “In terms of the standard
load case, i.e. the internal cabin pressure, this point-type joint reduces the deforma- tion on the outer skin, thereby maintaining the aerody-
namic quality of the aircraft door,” says Christian Wolf, Head of Airplane Doors Research and Technology at Airbus Helicopters. The high flow Victrex
PEEK 90HMF40 polymer is said to provide up to 100 times longer fatigue life and up to 20% greater specific strength and stiffness than aluminum 7075-T6. It also withstands the moisture that continuously accumulates inside aircraft doors. ❙

Mercedes cuts weight
Mercedes-Benz has adopted a 40% glass reinforced compound from Polykemi’s Polyfill PP HC range to replace a glass reinforced PBT in production of sun visor frames for its C-Class models. According to Swedish
compounder Polykemi, the Polyfill PP HC grade provides performance similar to glass reinforced PA or PBT but at a lower weight, which helps the car maker meet its fuel consumption and CO2 emission targets. Further savings have been
achieved through a redesign of the visor support struc- ture. Previously produced in a combination of metal and plastic, it is now a single mono-material component, which simplifies assembly and reduces cost. ❙
