effort to incorporate nano particles in the sizing. “We are in the process of evaluating the potential benefit depending on the type of nano we use (nanoclays, nanotube of carbon, graphene…),” he says. Byk has developed a new coupling agent for use in

polypropylene glass fibre compounds. It says Scona TPPP 9212 is characterized by its very high content of chemi- cally bonded maleic anhydride. “The MA groups of this coupling agent react with the amino groups of the silane of the glass fibre size, thereby producing a very stable structure,” the company reports. “The content of 1.8% maleic anhydride is exceptionally high, enabling consider- able improvement to be achieved in the compounds’ mechanical properties, even with a low dosage.” Byk already has a range of Scona coupling agents for

use in polypropylene glass fibre compounds, all based on its own solid-phase grafting process. The company says the gentle manufacturing process requires relatively low temperatures and produces a reduced number of cleavage products compared to melt grafting. A flushing process following the chemical conversion removes volatile components, resulting in the coupling agent having a very low VOC content, important in particular for automotive interior applications.
