UK-headquartered RPC Group has expanded its position in closures with the acquisition of Global Closure Systems (GCS) for €650m.

Vervaat said the acquisition of GCS “provides a compelling opportunity for RPC to expand its product offering with an extensive range of highly complementary closure and dispensing solutions and technologies.” The deal, which is subject to regulatory approv- als, is expected to complete by the end of March.
GCS, which has been owned
by investment fi rm PAI Partners since 2005, includes 23 manufacturing units located across Europe, the Americas
and Asia. Employing 3,500 people, it posted sales for 2014 of €590m and is on course for €603m for 2015. Vervaat said the move
would further strengthen RPC’s European platform in rigid plastic packaging, create signifi cant opportunities for procurement and effi ciency synergies, and provide additional platforms for growth outside Europe. In procurement alone, the deal will lift RPC’s annual resin purchasing volume from 475,000 tonnes to 610,000 tonnes. The company estimates this amounts to around 6% of Western European polymer output for rigid plastic
packaging. It expects this improved purchasing position, together with administrative and manufacturing footprint optimisation, to contribute to annual pre-tax cost savings of €15m within the fi rst two years. RPC Group generated sales of £1.22bn for the 2014/15 fi nancial year. Sales for the fi rst half of this fi nancial year were £800m, up by 35%.
RPC’s rapid growth has been achieved through a strategy of organic growth and acquisition. During 2015 the company acquired UK-based housewares producer Strata Products, Belgian PET cannister maker Innocan, UK cosmetics packaging producer Depicton, Norwegian food packaging manufacturer Promens and Netherlands- based PET Power. Previous acquisitions include Chinese packaging fi rm ACE Corporation in 2014, UK-based M&H Plastics in 2013 and Denmark’s Superfos in
2011.

PO snaps up Faurecia’s exteriors
Plastic Omnium has agreed to buy the Exterior Systems business of Faurecia, which produces automotive bumpers and front-end modules, in a deal valuing it at €665m. Faurecia’s Exterior Systems business has sales of around
€2bn and employs 7,700 people across 22 production sites in Europe, North and South America. Around 50% of its business comes from Germany. Plastic Omnium’s automo- tive exteriors business posted
sales of €2.8bn last year and employs 13,500 people across 67 production sites. Plastic Omnium said the deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, will give it annual sales of more than €8bn and will put in among the top 25 largest automotive suppliers. business, its plant at Hambach that supplies Smart, and two Faurecia joint venture opera- tions in Brazil and China are excluded from the deal. The disposal leaves it focused on automotive seating, emissions control and interiors.

Mitsui aims to bond in the mould
Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals has taken a 45% stake in MSCT Corporation, a subsidiary of Taiwanese electronic component maker Sentronic Interna- tional established to develop the Polymetac metal-to-plastic integral moulding technology. Mitsui’s Polymetac
technology allows bonding of metal and plastic during the moulding process using proprietary surface modifi cation. It is aimed at decorative and functional applications in the smart- phone and automotive industry.
