SRIA is delighted to announce that Tom Jones, Technical Manager, Compliance Department, recently gave a series
of successful speeches at prestigious industry events in Hong Kong. These included – the Eco Asia Expo, the Euro Chamber of Commerce Environment Seminar, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and the HAESCO Energy Matters Seminar 2015 – regarding energy efficiency in buildings. Tom’s seminars specifically covered how air leakage is
measured, the effect of regulations on air leakage in the UK and the impact on energy of reducing air leakage. He also summarised air tightness standards. He explained the history and impact of building regulations from the UK perspective, as there are no standards used in Hong Kong presently. He then explained the standards used to test and assess buildings in Europe today and the resulting energy savings expected. Tom said: “This was an excellent opportunity for attendees to hear about some of the energy efficiency best practice measures BSRIA is involved in and promotes.

hamesgate has supplied an inert gas fire suppression and H2 gas detection system for Europe’s largest lithium-ion
battery storage project in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, announced the company. The system installed at Leighton Buzzard comprises two conventional IG55 (Argon/Nitrogen) inert gas fire suppression controllers connected to smoke and hydrogen smoke detectors. The detection system comprises two VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus) detectors configured to provide detection for the “double-knock” arrangement of the fire suppression system. This provides an automatic fire detection and alarm system that is capable of
identifying when two elements actuate simultaneously within the same zone or area. H2 gas detection samples the return air of the highest sampling pipe (SCADA alarm only) while
primary smoke detection utilising VESDA smoke detectors covers the return air plenums of the cooling systems (independent of the fire suppression system) to provide advance warning of a fire incident.

Weidmüller launches new current measuring transducer to reduce wind turbine energy costs
o operate large applications as efficiently as possible, users need to
have constant information about the current status of devices and functions.
The ACT20C module from
Weidmüller enables such effective and strategic monitoring and optimisation of such systems and processes through AC and DC current readings.
Wind power installations are ideal
candidates for the ACT20C. In a lot of cases wind farms are situated in remote locations on land and at sea subject to extreme weather conditions, so onsite and immediate maintenance and monitoring isn’t always possible.
With the transducer, it is possible to implement more effective monitoring and observation from a
distance. The transducer can contribute to a reduction in equipment ‘wear and tear’ with its ability to alter a turbine’s motors (for pitch adjustment), device heaters or brakes, with information concerning their utilisation and operating performance.
The ACT20C is a crucial piece of technology that detects overloads or engine and brake
anomalies at an early stage. It can also respond promptly to poorly performing cooling fans or rotor blade de-icing.
Ice build-up on the rotor-blades can reduce energy efficiency because the weight of frozen
material throws the angle of the technology out of alignment leading to wasted energy and reduced effectiveness.
Configuration takes place through the ACT20C gateway with users gaining a complete overview of
all process parameters via Ethernet. The gateway is fully operational at a wide range of temperatures from -25 degrees to + 60 degrees, opening up a world of opportunity.
