here seems so many different swing analysis systems available to golfers these days – all power to your elbow if
you are into self analysis and improvement slightly removed from actually going to have a lesson with your trusty Pro. Having tried a number there is no doubt that a
personal lesson with the Pro is the way to go, but these gadgets certainly help the process – and the Pro. The Zepp system has been around for a while
now, and having used it for some time I’ve come to the conclusion it really is very good. The mechanics of how it works are now widely known so this review will concentrate on how helpful it can be to player and coach alike.
Range This month Richard Punyer reviews Zepp’s Swing Analysis System Your swing goals are based on your
age and personal profile and are measured numerically – again for each club – and not only do you get the numbers, you get a 3D swing image available to look at actually showing your swing path. This can be swivelled to view from the front down the line, the back down the line, from above and also front on. Put all these things together in a
lesson and you pretty much have the perfect package. If a Pro is working on getting a pupil to understand the importance of hand plane, its effect on swing plane and the resultant shape of a shot, he can actually show the pupil how much in percentage terms the hands are outside – or inside – on the downswing compared to the backswing. He can then back this up with the 3D swing model representation which actually draws the track lines for each. For those pupils who learn in different ways – and it is useful to all teachers and coaches to know and recognise the different ways individuals learn – the resources
The ideal scenario for this piece of kit is for it
to complement and assist the coach. The parameters it measures are – club speed, club plane, hand plane, tempo, backswing, hand speed and hip rotation. It gives instant, real time feedback on everything for every club.
provided here can be invaluable. The Pro/coach can then identify, with
numerical and 3D imaging, areas the pupil needs to go away and work on, with specific, measurable goals for each element of the swing – S.M.A.R.T targets if you will – Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic, Trackable. Targets with regard to specific numbers/measurement for each of the available areas can be agreed upon to go away and work

towards. Each practice and coaching session is logged on the pupil’s profile, instantly giving the teacher/coach feedback on how effective practice has been in between lessons – progress towards the previously agreed goals is easily identifiable to both coach and pupil, and the next area of effort recognised.
Verdict This is a great system. Easy to set up, easy to
use, instant feedback and pointers on individuals efforts to make themselves better golfers. What more could we ask for? I’d recommend this to Pro’s everywhere, not as
a replacement for your services, but a very affordable extension to them. If you haven’t already got one, or offer them as part of your service, do so. I’m convinced they make having lessons and coaching sessions better for both parties.
