Golfing Attitudes and Participation in the UK
SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC. have recently revealed information regarding golfing participation in the UK during 2014. Run annually since the mid-1990s, SGB Golf brings you the highlights of their latest instalment
2013 SNAPSHOT
• A poor first quarter (32% down on 2012) resulted in the number of rounds played in 2013 being at its lowest in over a decade
• 150,000 golfers lost • Below 3.5 million golfers for first time in 10 years
OVERALL PARTICIPATION FIGURES for 2014
•2014- 3.3 million • An increase of 3.5% rounds played compared to 2013
•Equipment sales have levelled across most categories- ‘the downturn’ is over
CAUSE FOR CONCERN
• As per 2013, a cause for concern is the number of ‘infrequent’ golfers, who play less than 12 times a year.
• This is at its lowest on record in this millennium (1,786,000).
• Time is a major factor influencing player numbers, and may be the significant reason behind the decline in infrequent golfers.
