Media Partners FEBRUARY 2015 THE EUROPEAN TRADE MAGAZINE

Contents FIRST WORDS The most significant story this month

is undoubtedly the decision brokered between Sky and the R&A to broadcast The Open for the next five years in a deal reportedly worth £75 million. The

deal sadly ends the BBC’s 60-year affiliation with the Open. There has been no shortage of comment from

all within the industry and indeed there has been harsh criticism from notable golfing figures including Rory Mcllroy and Lee Westwood. The BBC is now leſt with the sporting heavyweights of bowls, the BDO darts and the boat race! It's a shame but the writing has been on the wall for a long time. It just confirms a feeling I’ve had for a long time that the TV licence fee is no longer fit for purpose.

Well unless you’re a fan of Eastenders! I'm not an advocate of the Murdoch Empire at

all but it's hard to argue over the quality of their coverage. Take cricket for example- the coverage is second to none and over £150 million has been invested into the game, including state school participation and the women's game. I remember the derision from the cricket community many years ago but it has long since been forgotten. I hope Sky continue this investment within the game of golf. I think head has to rule the heart as much as it pains me to say it. I’d be interested to hear your views so please get in touch.
