ANCUN WAS created by Mexico tourism authorities to showcase the Yucatan peninsula’s
pristine beaches, natural water parks and consistently mild winters to northern travelers. It since has been “discovered” by vacationers throughout the world. What still remains
relatively unknown is the quality of golf opportunities that abound. Soft, golden sand beaches flow for 60 miles to the south, hosting every manner of hotel and resort. There currently are 14 with golf courses, 10 of them that are worth the visit alone. Few of the courses are crowded, a testament to the dominance of the beach mentality. Believe it or not, more
than 30 million people visit annually, but few know to bring
their clubs. Only the Moon Palace with its myriad hotel and timeshare options fills its 27-hole course on a regular basis, its iconic Jack Nicklaus nines being an attraction all on their own. And, of course, Mayakoba hosts a fall FedEx Series PGA Tour event. For the avid golfer, the
area is a paradise waiting for discovery. Following is a sampling of what awaits, with enough family options that daily golf could be part of the menu.
IBEROSTAR PARAISO There are several stunning resorts dotting Riviera Maya’s pristine beaches, including many with wonderful golf experiences. Iberostar in many ways represents them all, from the casual beach front of the Del Mar to the elaborate, marble-enhanced Grand Hotel, a luxury retreat. There are actually five hotels in all

with wide-ranging amenity packages and varied “all- inclusive” pricing. In between the two, one can choose from the Beach, Lindo or Maya. As you approach your
chosen hotel, you will notice the style and color theme that carries through buildings, pools and walkways, tied together with a series of activity centers, bars, youth areas, shops and restaurants. As you walk to the other hotels, colors and shapes complete the impression that
this is a world unto itself. The spa deserves special mention. There are enough therapy pools and services to make the golf widow’s golfer envious. A supervised kids’ enclave and teen nightclub make certain every family member can have a personal experience. For the beach lover, more
than 800 yards of golden sand are mere steps from your room. Beach attendants have every water sports lover’s goal, from kayaks, banana boats, and scuba to jet skis. Don’t forget
