BERNARD’S RECIPE FOR SATISFACTION SERVES OCOTILLO’S GOLFERS TO A TEE


the Valley of the Sun is one of my favorite places in fall and winter. At dusk, the sky glows deep golden pink, shimmering off the waterfalls cascading from a small boulder grouping to a creek and pond. The vision sparkles with bright fuschia bougainvillea and emerald green grass carpeting the surrounding fairways. This is high season for

playing golf — and for tourists crowding into restaurants, as 100-degree days have faded to sweater-worthy suppers. Yet the restaurant at Ocotillo Golf Resort rolls out more incentive to visit, offering Nine & Dine specials that include nine holes of golf followed by a mouth-watering meal. Options include a monster three-quarter-pound burger on a brioche bun or seared ahi on Tuesday for $45. It’s beer-battered fish and chips on Friday, also for $45, while Saturday means a double-bone pork chop with all the fixings for $49. It’s just a few of the


friendly touches at this long- standing eatery. My server told me the cod was coated with a batter made with San Tan Brewery’s Devil’s Ale, noting that the brew company is located in Chandler, too. Served with fries, coleslaw

But unless you know the neighborhood, you likely don’t think about Bernard’s as an everyday stop, although it does serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and a weekend brunch. To be honest, it’s not a place I would have considered over the past several years. While very pretty, the surrounding community, built in 1986, has that rather generic Arizona master-plan feel laced with red-tile roofs. Except new chef executive Jon Andersen came on earlier
