The gated and private,

1,100-acre residential golf community two hours north of Phoenix has also played host to three USGA championships, but humans aren’t the only ones enjoying the 36 holes. Greg Gonsalves, general manager of the golf club, said blue herons, a nesting bald eagle and elk often are spied on or around the Meadow and Canyon courses. “There’s an elk sighting

every day, and you’ll see hoof prints on the putting greens,” he said. For the two-legged course

enthusiast, the 7,001-yard, par 71 Canyon Golf Course designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish offers up some pleasant surprises. “You start off in a

park-like setting for the first seven holes, and then you’re in the canyon, with spectacular vistas and

elevation drops, along with a stream that runs through the canyon,” Gonsalves said. “There‘s also no out-of- bounds on the golf course, which is highly unusual.” The more walker-friendly,

par 72 Meadow Golf Course, a Weiskopf creation, features rolling hills and wide- open spaces accented by wildflowers and views of the San Francisco Peaks. Just a little over 800

home sites surround both golf courses, and Gonsalves said 740 homes are presently occupied. Thanks to a recent uptick in the economy, nine houses are currently under construction and another nine are in the planning phase. Bonnie Ligouri, a

designated broker with DMB Realty Network, said there are typically about 90 Forest Highlands properties (empty lots as well as homes) on the market, ranging in

price from $450,000 for cottage-style homes to $4.5 million for larger houses on the golf course. Lots run from $85,000 to $600,000, depending on location. A regular membership

comes automatically with the purchase of property within Forest Highlands, Gonsalves said, but special memberships are also available for those who don’t own property in the community. n
