TABLET TECH FOR INDIAN SCHOOLCHILDREN


Tech experts collaborate to improve children’s literacy and numeracy skills in India through affordable tablets and smartphones


Three technology associations, Qualcomm, Sesame Workshop India, and South Delhi Municipal Corporation, recently demonstrated how its Play 'n' Learn programme is improving learning opportunities for school children aged five–eight in underserved communities in India. The programme uses affordable tablets and


smartphones and fun educational games developed in the Hindi language to provide access to quality educational content on literacy and numeracy. “There is an increasing need to improve


learning outcomes at all levels,” said C.U. Kumar, Director, Directorate of Education, South Delhi Municipal Corporation.


“The Play 'n' Learn initiative is providing children


with a new way of learning via mobile technology and proving successful with increased levels of literacy and numeracy.” The first phase of the Play 'n' Learn programme


was launched in May 2013 with 40 children in an underprivileged neighbourhood in South Delhi who received 3G-enabled smartphones equipped with educational games. Since the initial implementation, 3G tablets have


been provided to more than 370 children. Sesame Workshop India is also currently working


to implement a similar programme in the Vaishali district of Bihar for 2,000 children located in 25 government primary schools. ET
