Flipping the Classroom
We caught up with Brian Bennet , Customer Solutions Engineer at TechSmith, who gave us some tips on the fl ipped classroom model
Can you tell us a lit le about your experience? As a teacher, I used lecture capture software to create instructional videos for my fl ipped classroom. As a result, my students spent more time asking informed questions and get ing one-on- one help in class because they could get instructional content anytime, anywhere. Now, working with TechSmith, I help teachers accomplish the same goals.
What is screencasting? Imagine having a video camera over your shoulder recording what you do on the computer…that’s screencasting. Screencasts can be utilized to record
a number of diff erent activities, from step-by-step tutorials that guide students through a particular task, to instructional videos showing students how to write lines of code.
What additional results can teachers expect? Personally, my teacher/student dynamic changed. Lessons became less about me giving and students receiving information and more about interaction. The shift was benefi cial to my students and a bet er use of classroom time. By recording live presentations, lectures and tutorials, I eff ectively gave students a rewind but on for key lessons, helping them learn at their own pace.

Sound check – Try to get as close to your microphone as possible to ensure you can be heard and that you limit any background noise
Brevity – Keep your video content short to avoid losing your students’ attention
Clarity – Plan how you would like to deliver your information in advance to avoid deviating from the subject matter
Lighting – Choose a place that is well lit as there is nothing worse than having to sit through a dimly-lit recording
Interaction – Consider making your videos more interactive with quizzes and use more visual examples to illustrate your points
Accessibility – Make sure your content is easy to see, easy to get to and can be viewed on a smartphone, tablet or PC
