PRODUCTS EDITOR’S CHOICE RAISING THE BAR FOR SYSTEM PROTECTION

A new range of DC surge protection devices (SPDs) have been introduced by Eaton’s Bussmann business for use within 600V DC or 1,000V DC PV systems, including a high performance model designed specifically for 1,000A short circuit current rating applications typically found in large recombiners or central inverters. Certified to EN 50539-11, the line-up comprises Type 1 and 2, Type 2 High

Performance and Type 2 devices that use metal oxide varistor (MOV) technology to ‘clamp’ the voltage, and divert transient voltage surges to earth. The modular designs feature integrated fault indication that turns red, visually alerting the operator to whether the device has reached the end of its life and needs to be replaced with a new module. The option of remote contact signaling allows system operators to monitor the status of individual SPDs and pinpoint and replace any that have operated or reached

the end of their life. The SPDs can be used in most environments with an operational temperature range from -40°C to 80°C, making them well suited to the harsh environments of PV installations. Surge protection is necessary to protect solar PV installations, including sensitive associated electrical and

electronic equipment, from overvoltage surges, especially indirect lightning strikes that might otherwise damage them. Bussmann’s new range of SPDs help prevent possible damage that might occur from such events.

Amtech has announced the release of its next generation (XG) estimating software. Estimation XG is the first of a range of interoperable software products that Amtech are developing. With so many trades overlapping, Amtech feel it is important to ensure its software works with other packages to provide seamless integration. Powerful wizards make producing large estimates

easier, and multiple estimates can be worked on at the same time for maximum efficiency.

Filters allow items to be located and selected much quicker, putting the user more in control and a tree structure speed menu puts frequently used products immediately at hand. The software is automatically updated weekly with manufacturer supplied

information ensuring estimates are always using the latest and most accurate prices.

Hall-effect current sensors

HARTING has introduced a range of Hall-effect current sensors with a current range from 100A to 800A. The new HCSE (Hall-effect current sensors Eco) family consists of four models, and are based on the open- loop measurement principle which provides a direct representation of the primary current with an accuracy of up to ±1%.

The HCSE sensors can measure direct or alternating currents,

including signals with complex waveforms, over a frequency range from 0 to 50kHz. Because the devices use Hall-effect technology to sense the magnetic field created by the current flowing in a conductor, they provide non-contact, galvanically isolated measurements with high immunity to interference from the magnetic fields of external current carrying conductors. The temperature range of -25° to 85°C allows use in

thermally critical applications. The sensors come in standard sizes and their compact, unified shape across the whole product range offers a high degree of freedom for integration into individual applications. Thanks to their high reliability and accuracy, the new sensors are well suited for applications such as power supplies for welding equipment, rectifiers for direct current drives or uninterruptible power supplies.

NEW LABEL PRINTER

A new label printer for electricians is now available from Brother. The PT- E550WVP produces durable labels up to 24mm wide that are resistant to water, abrasion and extreme temperatures. This helps electricians to ensure that

wires and other equipment, including fuse boxes, sockets, and health and safety signage, are correctly labelled, easily identifiable and compliant with the Wiring Regulations. The label printer features Wireless

Direct connectivity meaning that information, such as symbols, logos and databases, can be instantly transferred from mobile devices or PCs and stored on the machine. This can then be used to produce labels quickly and easily. In addition, the PT-E550WVP is

compatible with Brother’s Cable Label Tool app, which offers standard templates meaning electricians can design labels on their smartphone/tablet. The new machine also includes a

new half-cut feature, ensuring tape wastage is minimal, a large backlit LCD display, which is well suited for use in dark places, and a QWERTY keyboard

Legrand’s new range of P17 Tempra Pro industrial plugs and sockets include a patented quick open/close mechanism and a dual angle mounting position for surface mounting sockets. The range includes 16A and 32A straight

plugs, mobile sockets, panel mounting sockets and surface mounting sockets which are available in both IP44 and IP66/67 rated versions. All products in the revised range are now fabricated using polyamide 6, which offers heat resistance and ensures the range is suitable for harsh industrial environments. Legrand has redesigned the

opening/closing system on the range’s mobile plugs and sockets. The units open by turning the two parts of the product in opposite directions and are unlocked by pressing the recessed release mechanism with a screwdriver. A grip section has also been included on the body of all mobile products within the range for safety and ease of handling. A new captive cable grip has also been designed with an anti- vibration system. The new P17 Tempra Pro range makes cable stripping simple with markings on

the terminals which make it easier to identify the required length of cable. Meanwhile, captive screws ensure quick and easy installation with just one captive screw per connection terminal. The surface mounting sockets now offer a choice of 50 or 250 mounting positions in a single unit. The P17 Tempra Pro surface mounting sockets also now include four threaded and sealed cable entries at the top and the bottom of each unit. For the IP66/67 products, other safety

improvements include engraved position markings on the ring cover so that end users can verify whether the P17 Tempra Pro unit is in the open or closed position.
