Positive outlook for industry’s future
THE LATEST B&ES state of trade survey, undertaken in July, has some very good news for the building engineering services industry. Members who
participated in the survey were reporting improvements in enquiries, order books and turnover. If anything, this further strengthens the view that a strong economic recovery is taking root. According to the report, more than half of
respondents said their order books and their inquiry levels were increasing and they felt positive about future prospects. The biggest improvements were reported by

companies involved with service and facilities and industrial/commercial installation. Many companies were also able to confirm
that they are now employing more people than they were six months ago, while an even higher number expect that they will be recruiting in the latter part of this year. In light of the general industry skills shortage it’s also good news that a number of these companies who are recruiting are hiring apprentices or trainees. The biggest successes were reported in the
areas of East Anglia, East Midlands and the South West of England. The state of trade survey, which is the third successive survey to reveal positive responses, certainly seems to indicate that confidence is growing and the outlook for the future is good.
Magazine Team HVR AWARDS
The HVR Awards has received an excellent response this year with a 30 per cent increase in the number of entries compared with last year.
2014
This year the the quality of entries has been very high with impressive detail in supporting documents.
I believe this a testament to the amount of time and effort taken by the entrants and it meant that some of the categories were hotly contested. The entries went before our independent panel of judges, who represent three key industry organisations, on September 30. We would like to thank the judges Mark Oakes, head of specialist group services (B&ES); Mike Smith, Director Engineer- ing (BSRIA); Mike Duggan, Technical Manager (FETA) for taking time to participating on the judging panel.
