Variable-speed drives cut costs A hospital is set to save around £15,000 a year on air handling costs following the installation of variable-speed drives (VSDs) by ABB authorised value provider Inverter Drive Systems (IDS). The project involved fitting ABB drives to a number of air handling units (AHUs) in Bedford Hospital’s maternity and pathology departments, cutting air volumes to save on energy use.
IDS approached the hospital with a proposal to investigate its motor-driven fan applications with a view to using VSDs to cut energy use. It investigated the AHUs and together with the hospital, identified four AHUs as suitable candidates for retrofitting with VSDs. Previously, the AHUs were used direct-on-line, with no form of control. IDS proposed retrofitting four AHUs, two in each department. The solution involved four 11 kW drives and one each of 7.5 kW, 15 kW and 3 kW. All were three-phase, ABB HVAC drives, ACH550, with IP54 enclosures.
Before installation, IDS had predicted a speed reduction of 15% but achieved 20%. This equated to a saving in energy costs of £15,000 a year. ABB
Jaga introduces new LST radiator The new Guardian LST from Jaga Heating Products has been specifically designed to be quick and easy to install.
It also provides the ideal combination of high output heat convection and safe surface temperature for a range of applications.
Available in wall mounted (WT) and flush to the floor (FT) options, it achieves its super-fast installation time by being designed as a lightweight yet robust, single piece casing that is easy to lift and handle by a tradesman working alone. The casing stays safe at a cool to touch temperature of less than 43°C, even at high flow temperatures. It features Jaga Low-H2O heat exchangers, tested to 20bar and guaranteed to perform at a working pressure of 10 bar. Low H2O heating elements are ultra-efficient providing maximum output from minimum dimensions. Due to their low mass, low water content they possess very low thermal inertia, so they heat up and cool down rapidly and have been proven by BRE to offer a 10% saving in energy consumption against comparable steel panel radiators. Both the floor and wall models are also available with twin LowH2O heat exchangers which allow the boiler temperature to be set approximately 15° lower yet still achieve the same output. Marflow Hydronics adds valve set Marflow Hydronics has launched the Xterminator® Lite valve set with 40mm centre assembly that comes as a handy off the shelf solution.
The set is smaller and more compact and comes in left and right handed versions. The handles are colour coded for ease of use; it has long levers and fewer leak paths; it is suitable for vertical and horizontal coils; and it has been designed so that interchangeability is simple.
Joint managing director, Martin Lowe, said: “After first developing the 40mm centre assembly in 2008, we’ve been constantly looking at real life situations in the field and we’ve been dedicated to making improvements wherever possible on our products. We’ve taken all the great features and benefits of the present valve set and have then added some brand new elements to the design to try and give our customers the best assembly we could.”

Bitzer launches CSVW2 compressors Bitzer’s new CSVW2 compact screw compressor has been specially designed for use with water-cooled liquid chillers in installations with low condensing temperatures. Its mechanism is based on the tried-and-tested CSVH2 compact screw compressor, therefore combining proven strengths with new capabilities at low load conditions.
In order to achieve a high COP for this application and attain a good ESEER, Bitzer has integrated some innovative drive technology. This is particularly important in chillers using water-cooled condensers. The CSVW2 includes a new permanent magnet motor which delivers better efficiency at low speeds and low loads than the CSVH series. Bitzer has also modified the frequency inverter. The CSVW2 has been optimised for water-cooled rather than air- cooled chillers. The features of the CSVH2 design have been adapted for these new operating conditions, whilst maintaining its strengths such as durability and a wide application range. The CSVW2 also features automatic operating parameter control and a performance range which can be reduced by up to 16 per cent. It is the same size and weight as the compact CSVH2. BITZER UK

The Condair ME consists of an evaporative module located inside the AHU, a patented self-contained hydraulic unit and an intuitive touch-screen control panel. The hydraulic unit pumps water to the top of the evaporative module where it flows down the corrugated surface of its evaporative media. As air passes through the wetted media it is humidified and cooled. The compact unit is made of toughened glass-reinforced plastic and features a water tank, up to five water pumps and a pumped drain. It can be located either inside or outside of the AHU. Exterior mounting enables all mechanical components to be located outside the duct and most maintenance to take place without any AHU downtime. The system’s water pumps, each incorporating 32W magnetic drive impellors, allow the Condair ME to provide up to five-stage control as standard. JS Humidifiers

Remeha boilers help university Remeha Quinta Eco Plus passive flue gas heat recovery systems are providing energy-saving, environmentally-friendly heating and hot water at Cardiff University’s new flagship student accommodation development, Talybont Gate.
Nigel Griffin, project engineer at Cardiff University, specified six Quinta Eco Plus 115 heating and hot water systems as the affordable solution both to meeting the low carbon requirements and raised efficiencies required by Part L of the Building Regulations for new build developments, and to providing reliable comfort and warmth throughout the 179-bed, 6-storey building from its roof-top plant room. The Quinta Eco Plus ‘super condensing’ heating and hot water system consists of the Remeha Quinta Pro, a fully-modulating, commercial condensing boiler, and the Eco Plus, a patented passive flue gas heat recovery device that recovers what would be otherwise wasted energy equivalent to up to 15% of the gross input. At Talybont Gate, the recovered energy is used efficiently to pre-heat the two 2,000 litre cylinders that supply domestic hot water to the 179 en-suite bathrooms. The Quinta Eco Plus systems are the latest of many Remeha boilers to be installed at Cardiff University. Remeha

Air conditioning solution for scanner A bespoke Toshiba air conditioning system is being used to cool a state-of-the-art transportable MRI scanner, the first of its kind to be developed by Toshiba Medical Systems.
The transportable facility enables high resolution scans of individual limbs or the whole body to be carried out on location. Vital cooling for the diagnostic unit has been provided by Just Air Conditioning, working with Toshiba distributor AMP. The supplier provided a modified vertically-ducted VRF unit, twinned with a split system condensing unit, to deliver the cooling required for the facility’s examination room. At the heart of the scanner is a 5.5 tonne electromagnet cooled by liquid helium, linked to sophisticated computer analysis equipment to give very high resolution scans of limbs or a patient’s whole body. Space was a major design consideration in the project, as MRI scanners are normally located in their own suites within hospitals. In addition to the ducted cooling unit, two further split air conditioning systems were required – one for the control room and another, ceiling-suspended, in the facility’s technical room. Each is equipped with its own condensing unit, sited on the front-bulkhead of the transportable MRI unit. Toshiba Air Conditioning
