An attractive option for solving rising heating bills

Clyde MacVeigh looks at some of the factors which are making heat pumps a suitable solution

Clean, convenient, efficient and with significant running cost sav- ings compared to alternative tech- nologies, heat pump technology has become a popular solution to

rising energy bills in recent years. In the public and private sectors alike, commercial properties are quickly realising the opportunity presented by heat pumps, which have already been identified by DECC as central to the future of energy efficient heating technology.

Ground source heat pumps have proved particularly popular

on new build projects, while air source heat pumps, which are far less disruptive to install, are well suited to refurbishments too. In previous years, two of the biggest barriers to heat pump installations were the cost of installation and the perceived complexity of the technology. It is a testament to the progress made by the heat pump industry that there are now valid

reasons why neither of these should prevent any organisation from investing.

As we are all aware the

Government’s non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) was launched in 2011 and offers financial incentives, specifically guaranteed tariffs over 20 years, to switch to certain green technolo- gies. Ground source heat pumps
