TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION New avalanche
photodiodes offer high sensitivities for red and green light
F
irst Sensor presents the Series 8r silicon avalanche photodiodes (APDs) with high sensitivities in the red and green wavelength range. The APDs feature a flat gain curve where the internal amplification rises slowly with the applied reverse bias voltage. Therefore, the Series 8r allows for easy and accurate adjustments of high gain factors.
the corridors. In December 2007, the hotel was closed to undergo a £220M refit and a new energy-efficient system that reduced the hotel's reliance on the national electricity grid by approximately 20% and increased reuse and recycling.
As
sustainability is a core value for The Savoy, the lamp changeover helps the hotel to conserve energy and reduce the overall impact of their operations on the environment, under the guidance of Fairmont’s Sustainability Partnership Programme. Mark Gee, from specialist lighting supplier Lamp Spec, was approached to help solve the problem and he suggested replacing the 35W Halogen MR16’s with Megaman’s 6W MR16 2400K LED lamps. The Megaman lamps were agreed and the illumination from these ultra warm white lamps offers a traditional warm feel which complements the rich colour scheme and wood mouldings.

The new photodiodes are ideal for applications which demand fast rise times and low capacitance. The Series 8r provides APD chips with active areas of different sizes. The devices are available in leadless ceramic-carrier SMD packages or hermetically sealed TO housings. The very flat SMD packages can be equipped with different band-pass filters on request. Further, First Sensor offers custom avalanche photodiodes which can be adapted to specific customer requirements with respect to sensitivity, gain, speed or capacitance.

Sinergy e-Tracker helps deliver savings for police force
A
n initiative by Bedfordshire Police force to improve its energy efficiency has delivered a 25% cut in power bills in two years through a mix of energy saving initiatives, including the use of a Marshall-Tufflex portable sub-metering unit. The force invested in the handheld Sinergy e-Tracker kWh sub-meter two years ago and since then it has toured the county’s police stations, operational bases and Kempston headquarters auditing energy use and
highlighting areas of inefficient power use. “The sub-meter has saved us a significant amount of money and, perhaps just as importantly, it has helped us to target and prioritise energy saving initiatives,” said force estates and facility manager Nigel Achurch. “At headquarters e-Tracker identified unbalanced loads across the three phases. We are investigating what we can move from one phase to another to bring the apparent power closer to the true power.”

Delmatic Provides an Excellent Environment for Employees at Admiral Group
D
elmatic has designed a fully flexible and energy efficient Dali dimming system for the new 245,000 sq ft global headquarters for motor insurance
company Admiral Group. The eleven-storey building is the biggest pre-let scheme ever undertaken in Cardiff and the Delmatic system controls lighting throughout the building from level B2 to 11th, including the car park and plant areas. The Delmatic system comprises Head end PC with advanced active graphical software, Routers, Dali Buswire Modules, Dali Presence/Absence detectors, Dali Multisensors and Dali switches. Dali luminaires and Dali local control devices share common buswire and network to minimise wiring. The system has been carefully tailored to the needs of the employees at Admiral and Delmatic has incorporated energy efficient presence and absence detection within all areas, daylight linked dimming within perimeter areas and scene setting within meeting and training rooms.

market grip with enhanced aluminium clamps
llis has launched an enhanced range of 1A and 2A bolt Aluminium clamps. Completely redesigned, including finite element analysis (FEA), the new range has an improved shape, which delivers greater strength, while its flexibility is aided by the availability of 22 different sizes over both families of product. Richard Shaw, managing director of Ellis, said: “When we first added Aluminium clamps to our product portfolio we saw them as nothing more than a metallic alternative to our 2F plastic clamps, but it soon became apparent that there was real demand for them, especially if we were able to deliver a mechanically stronger product with even more variants.” With products ranging from 38mm to 120mm for the 2A clamp, and 10mm to 58mm for the 1A clamp, the enhanced range is diecast from LM6 Cast Aluminium using tooling which has been designed and manufactured in-house.
