16th Annual NCGA Senior Four-Ball Championship Greenhorn Creek and Saddle Creek | May 21-23

Longtime friends Mike Staskus and Frank Pieper have

been playing together for decades, but they had never teamed up for a four-ball event. Turns out they are quite the deadly duo. Pieper and Staskus tied the tournament record in

their first round with a 9-under 63, then broke it the second day with a 10-under 62. They cooled off slightly the final day with a 6-un- der 66 to shoot a 19-under 197, but still beat Ralph Costanzo and Greg O’Malley by two. “This is a big win for me,” said Pieper, a member

at Monterey Peninsula Country Club. “I’ve won some NorCal events but never an NCGA event, so this one is special.”

The duo was one stroke off the overall tournament

record set by Mark Miller and Herb Jensen in 2006. “It’s great to win,” said Staskus, who plays out of

The Olympic Club and Sharon Heights. “It’s great to see Frank break through, too.”

Danny Paniccia and Mike Stieler

48th Annual NCGA Four-Ball Championship Spyglass Hill | May 9-11

Danny Paniccia and Mike Stieler always wanted to win

this event. Now they’ve done it twice in a row. The former co-workers at Riverbend GC showed

they can still work together quite well, finishing with a 9-under 209 to hold off the teams of Steve Woods/Jeff Glichrist and Gary Dunn/Cameron Champ by one. “It feels good,” said Paniccia shortly after his team

defended its title. “It was close all day. I was pretty nervous coming down the stretch.” Paniccia and Stieler rallied from an opening 71 with a 5-under 67 the second day to jump into a tie for the lead. They closed with a 69, but their win wasn’t clinched until birdie attempts by Dunn and Champ missed on the final hole of the championship. Paniccia and Stieler won back-to-back titles for the first time since Taylor Travis and Ryan Sloane in 2008 and 2009. No team has ever won three in a row. Can Paniccia and Stieler make history? “Absolutely, why not?” said Stieler with a smile.

“I think Spyglass Hill is the greatest course I’ve ever played. I’ve got a pretty good partner, too.”
