Wilson Wins, But Stanford Stalls in NCAA Semifinals Cameron Wilson F

or the second straight year, a Bay Area Pac-12 player won the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship. And for the second straight year, a

Bay Area Pac-12 team was upset in the semifinals of the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship after qualify- ing as the No. 1 seed. Cameron Wilson became the first Stanford golfer since Tiger Woods to

win the NCAA Men’s Golf Individual Championship, overcoming a closing bogey with a 10-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole to beat Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans. “It’s incredible,” Wilson told the Golf Channel moments after clinching the win. “I’m so glad I made that putt. This

is surreal.” Wilson keeps the Individual Na-

tional Championship in the Bay Area, as Cal’s Max Homa won the title last year. The left-handed Wilson shot a dazzling second-round 7-under 63 at Prairie Dunes in Kansas to take a one- shot lead over teammate and world No. 1 amateur Patrick Rodgers. Wilson, the No. 5 amateur in the

world, closed with an even-par 70 to finish at 6 under. Wilson’s third win of the year helped

Stanford qualify as the No. 1 seed for the eight-team match play tree. Stanford dominated the qualify-

ing, shooting 13-under in three rounds, which was nine strokes better than eventual champion Alabama and LSU. But Stanford lost 3-2 in the semifi-

nals to Oklahoma State, ending a quest for its first national title since 2007. Unfortunately, it’s a familiar story in these parts. Last year, Cal lost by the same 3-2 margin in the semifinals to Illinois de- spite entering the championship as the overwhelming favorite.
