1933 • By this time sales of lots dropped off signifi cantly, but the his- tory of tossing hides from the cliff top nearly 100 years before remained. Ruth Burris (second from left) from Arizona was visiting her parents in Huntington Park. Her father, Harry Hambly (left) brought his grandchildren to see Dana Point which reminded him so much of his homeland in Cornwall England. Grandson Gene Burris (right) is now a resident of Dana Point. 1960s • The surfi ng industry began here in Dana Point with Hobie Alter and his mod- ernization of the surfboard, followed by the invention of the Hobie Cat catamaran. Then, in 1968, Bruce Brown produced the movie The Endless Summer and surfi ng went worldwide.
1960 • After searching for a spot on the south Orange County coast for a new harbor, the Dana Point cove was chosen. Offi cially opening on July 31, 1971 the beautiful harbor is one of the visitor magnets to the area.
1989 • After two years of campaigning and six prior attempts, residents suc- ceeded at incorporating the city. The incorporation included the three commu- nities of Monarch Beach, Dana Point and Capistrano Beach.
2014 • Now celebrating its 25th year of incorporation, Dana Point has become a Five Star destination, home to several world-class resorts and some of the world’s most breathtak- ing beaches. Mile-long coastal views, top-notch cuisine, a multitude of ways to enjoy recreation on the Pacifi c and some of the world’s best whale watching have earned the city global recognition.
