Sailing - get the whole family out on the water for fun and friendship
Ask any child why they enjoy sailing you’ll find that fun and friendship are pretty much top of the list. Racing or playing games on the water and in and meeting
all weathers, lots of youngsters
the same age, is a winning combination. So it’s no surprise that for many, sailing — in a boat or on a board — becomes not just a hobby, but a lifelong passion. Sailing can help youngsters to develop a range of life skills. Amanda Van Santen, RYA Chief Instructor for
Dinghy and Windsurfing, explains: “Being out on the water is fantastic for keeping fit, building confidence and self-esteem, as well as resilience and independence. Parents, meanwhile, find it’s great to see their children outside and being active, many also see an improvement in school work coinciding with a growing interest in sailing and all it brings.” Emily Colville, age nine, who belongs to the
Sprats at the Warsash Sailing Club, says, “I love sailing. It helps you to work with other people in a team. You can race against others, have a laugh and learn new things together, and I’ve made loads of friends through the club.”
Whatever kind of sailing your children want to do,
the most important factor to remember is the fun factor. Aside from enjoying racing their friends and taking part in events, capsizing, water fights, pirate treasure hunts and sailing picnics feature high on their wish list. It’s got to be fun, it’s got to be safe, and it’s got to be about them learning new things.
iGetting out on the water s easy!
With the summer holidays just around the corner, clubs and centres nationwide will be booking up their summer school and holiday courses. Most will run short taster sessions, normally a couple of hours’ for a small cost, so your children can see whether they like it before being signed up to take a course. If they get bitten by the bug, the RYA Youth
Sailing and Windsurfing Schemes (from Stage 1 to Stage 4) provide a range of knowledge and skills, including steering and boat handling techniques before progressing to setting the boat or board up, launching, sailing in any direction and solving
problems afloat. All this is taught under the watchful eye of a qualified RYA Instructor. Children aged eight to 18 can also get into the
sport through the RYA’s grassroots programme, OnBoard, which provides thousands of low cost sailing and windsurfing opportunities as part of
the curriculum through local youth groups.

has three key members: Ed Gray, owner and camper van guru; Karen Collins, Ed’s partner; and Amy Loader. Te idea had been in the back of Ed’s mind for several years while he was working on his restoration business, Wide5, where he built up a reputation in the world of VW campers doing bespoke restorations of authentic classic VWs for enthusiasts who share the passion of owning such iconic vehicles. Some of the rarest vans in the collection includes a 1962 23-window Samba, a 1953 Barndoor and an

‘Sunset’, a left-hand
drive Westfalia, that was collected from Germany in 2011; ‘Ocean’ and ‘Berry’, both right-hand drive vehicles were obtained in the UK during 2012. Ed will go to any location within Europe to get the ‘right’ van; it’s a question of keeping his ears to the ground and eyes peeled and, of course, the contacts he’s built up over the years are a great source. Obviously, Ed maintains the vans and each one
undergoes a thorough inspection and test before going out on hire. All the vans are fully equipped with the essentials you need for a perfect holiday, including a two-ring gas hob, cool box, cooking
