Magazines make learning fun!

Tere’s no reason why early learning can’t be fun for all, especially if your child’s favourite characters are there to help. With Fun To Learn magazines it’s reassuring to know that beyond the appeal of the free gift, the magazine’s content is giving them a head start in key literacy and numeracy skills. Each magazine in the Fun To Learn range, from

preschool learning expert Redan Publishing, is carefully designed to promote creative and imaginative skills using a phonics-based reading system that supports pre and primary school early- learning goals. Now Redan’s award-winning editorial team have

taken their inspirational early-learning techniques online, with an interactive, digital version of their hugely popular Peppa Pig Bag-O-Fun magazine. Supporting the National Curriculum’s Early

Years Foundation Stage, the interactive magazine includes a wonderful, fully narrated read-along story with a variety of entertaining activities and games based on the popular TV show, Peppa Pig. Currently playable on iPad and iPad MINI (and

soon to be available on Android devices), pre- school children are encouraged to participate in early educational activities, as they work through the app and read along with the story. To ensure that readers get the most educational

value out of their magazines and apps, Redan has put together the following tips:

• Allow your child to feel in charge • Draw attention to activities you know that they enjoy to start with and move to more challenging ones as they gain confidence

• Offer help and prompts where necessary • Encourage your child to talk about what they’re doing • Praise and encourage to make learning an enjoyable experience for you and your child

Perfect for long journeys, rainy days or as a gift for friends or family.

Redan’s magazines are

educational and inspiring, but most importantly they’re all about enjoying being a kid!

Coding and tech summer camps

You may know your phone better than the back of your hand, but let’s say you wanted to build a game for it, would you even know where to begin? Fire Tech Camp empowers young people across the UK to do just that, nurturing their creativity and channelling it into technology to make something amazing. Tat ‘something amazing’ could be a video game

or a robot, an animated film, a digital music track or a useful computer programme, even an electronic sensor that tells you when to water the plants! Camps are geared up for aspiring inventors,

programmers and games designers from as young as nine years old. Coding courses in Java and Python, especially designed for teens, teach skills that are fast becoming recognised as vital in education and business. Te most exciting addition to the Fire Tech curriculum is a Rapid Prototyping camp, which incorporates 3D Printing. Tis camp is at the cutting-edge of the nascent Maker Movement, blending elements of engineering, craft and digital and manual design, bringing ideas off the screen and into “real life”. Other camps include Video Game Design,

Robotics, Physical Computing for Teens with Arduino, Stop Motion and 2D Animation, 3D Animation and Digital Music Production. Fire Tech Camp launched in London back in 2012

and are now happy to be implementing some advice from one of their young Arduino developers (“Tere should be more camps like this on Earth!!”) and are expanding across the UK this summer. Campers can now get technical in three of England’s leading ‘silicon’ cities: Bristol, Brighton and Manchester. Te London camps run Monday to Friday throughout August, while a smaller two-week course schedule is available at the regional locations. Expert trainers work with kids and teens

aged 9-18 on their chosen topic, guiding them through five days of exploration, development and

implementation. Time at the screen is broken up with outdoor activities and group work. Parents are invited to join in on the last day, when campers showcase their projects. At the heart of every camp is a focus on creativity,

collaboration and critical thinking. Children are challenged to take on new concepts, develop their tech skills and uncover the workings of a digital world that can be endlessly intriguing and a whole lot of fun. Get your kids wired up this summer, in a good way!
