REVIEWS On the Range
In our new regular feature, SGB’s Richard Punyer reviews the latest products to hit the shelves of SGB Golf. This month he tests Pelham & Strutt’s innovative new compression wear
Overview: Said to be the only product of its kind in the golf
market today, the long sleeve compression sport tops have integrated physiotherapy type taping woven into the dual regulation temperature fabric garments for improved posture, core stability and temperature control. The biomechanical effects of the tops were put
to the test in October 2013 at Welcombe Golf Club. Some interesting results were achieved with single figure handicappers and Pro’s seeing an average dispersal reduction of 5.7 yards using a 7 iron when wearing the tops.
Verdict: When I first took this product out of its box my
first thought was – “my god, it’s not going to fit!” Having struggled manfully when I got it on I was amazed – although skin tight, it didn’t feel tight. It certainly didn’t feel ‘as tight’ as some other ‘compression wear’ available from some other well- known brands. First things first- posture. You can really feel your
shoulders being pulled back and standing more upright as a result so it helps with back issues and strain which those of you of a certain age will appreciate! Your posture is really improved as a result and it does feel like a second skin- a surprise compared to the usual baselayer experience. When playing, I tend to have a bad habit of stooping, rather than having a straight back so the product can only be an improvement for me personally. Temperature regulation was very good
throughout the day. It warmed me up when it was cold in the morning but when the heating began to take hold, it did not make me feel as though I was overheating and stifled – again as my others do when still worn in the clubhouse after a round of golf. There was no noticeable difference in length
of shot or dispersion but certainly no detrimental impact either. I think this may need to be examined in more detail in future as a dispersal reduction claim of 5.7 yards on average is a bold claim. At a reasonably high-end pricing point, the
product is certainly not cheap. However your customers will appreciate the extra expense after testing the product for themselves.
Summary: Like a second skin! Perhaps a short sleeved
version for the summer is needed to expand the product range.
