In what ways does the art industry differ from other industries? How does this change your approach to your career?

If you look at the clothing industry for example, and you look at Hugo Boss — you see clothing made of silk and cashmere, the stitching is impeccable, the fit is amazing. And then you look at something that is mass-produced. It is not necessarily where it is made — every place has its quality and every place has its bargains. With art, you feel it right away. This is the whole point about collectors winning. I have represented Paul Calle for years and years and years. Later, his work was selling to museums. I will always be proud that I represented his work. His credentials speak for themselves.

Where do you see the future of the art business in the next decade?

I have always felt that the best should get their due, and I feel over the past few decades the art world has gotten homogenized. In a way, I feel like less art will be commercially successful. If you look at the music world, so many people play guitar, but only maybe 50 people will go onstage and have music listened to by the masses. Art galleries are really showing the best of the best, the people who have committed themselves to it.

What would be your advice to art enthusiasts looking to collect new works at this time? Spend more and buy the best. Save up and buy one painting. Buy something really special, something you really love. Buy something that gives you something. It could be excitement, it could be peace. Some people have tranquil jobs and are looking for a kind of jolt when they get home. Other people have stressful jobs and want something more serene. I have always been kind of excited by an artist. That’s what draws me in.

“You think about art as something that you don’t need. But as beings, things are very primal. Since we’ve been able to communicate, we’ve communicated through art, and as we evolved, it became recognized as art.”
