surroundings. Going to galleries and museums to view art is one of the ways he does so. “I travel a lot and I work in clubs. To me, art is quiet. That reaches me,” he explains. “It relaxes me, which allows my mind to go different places. It quiets the mind, which allows me to be creative.” Bodden first discovered Exclusive Collections Gallery at The Forum Shops in Las Vegas, where he came upon the work of sculptor Paul B. Lotz. Bodden immediately connected with Surely, You Jest?, which depicts a jester holding a small jester in hand. “My specialties are probably topical comedy and social commentary. I love talking about the human condition and people. Politics and that sort of thing,” he says. The jester perfectly reflects his career as a comedian. Both use comedy to express truth, and the jester image already had importance for Bodden even before he saw the sculpture. He just so happens to have a tattoo of one. “It’s really about buying something you like,” Bodden says about collecting. “Early on when I went to an art gallery, the guy there said art can be a very pretentious world, and everyone’s about this painting and now it’s worth millions…. But you really have to buy something you like. So that’s what drives me. The jester was a perfect example. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Right now it’s sitting in the middle of my dining room table.” While Bodden does not consider himself an art collector in the traditional sense, he responds to works of art that have meaning for him. “I have a couple of drawings by Adam Reed, who does jazz paintings. I love music. Jazz music. I also have a painting by David Lippenberger, who is known for creating paintings of the everyman in different situations.”

Bodden has no regrets when it comes to

collecting art. “Take a chance, and buy it. Art can be expensive. Most people are intimidated by their first art purchase. My advice is if you feel that you like the art and it moves you, then go for it.”
