NOTICE BOARD KATIE GOES FOR GOLD

Multi-talented Sutton Valence student Katie Latter is going for gold, after being picked out as a possible contender for Team GB. Katie, aged 15, from Kingswood, Maidstone, represents the county at u16 hockey and u17 cricket and shines at every sporting activity she tries her hand at – including running, football and javelin. When she was applying

for a sports scholarship at the school, she was asked to bowl a ball in the cricket nets – something she had never done before, having not played cricket at that stage. Today, she plays for the Kent u17 cricket team and also for Leeds and Broomfield Cricket Club where her batting average in 2012 was 108. Katie’s attitude has now

won her a place in the lottery- funded Girls4Gold programme, designed to select young women

with motivation and determination to succeed. The sporting teenager has been chosen as one of 464 girls who could be trained to compete in the 2020 Olympics… not in any of her regular sports, but in canoeing! However, if she fails to make the grade

in a rigorous selection process, which will see the contenders finally whittled down to 10, there is still a chance she could be offered a place on a training programme for one of many other sports. Katie was invited to attend the

Girls4Gold assessment at the Olympic Park after seeing it advertised on the England hockey website. The first hurdle was taking part in a series of physiological tests, measuring strength, speed and aerobic fitness, in front of assessors who included sports scientists and coaches. Katie said: “This is a

huge opportunity for me and I am tremendously excited. Even if I am not selected for canoe training, it opens the doors to opportunities in a whole host of other disciplines.”

LORET TO’S GOLF TRIUMPH

Scotland’s Loretto Golf Academy has won the inaugural Desert Springs European Schools Team Championships in the Almeria region of south-east Spain held in February. The competition, organised jointly by the exclusive Desert Springs Golf resort and Millfield School, was an open event to all schools in the UK, and attracted a total of 19 teams of four players from schools such as Wellington, Bradfield, Reeds, Durham and hosts Millfield. Loretto finished first and second in a very close final day, with 16-year-old John-Paul Ralph from Prenton in Cheshire winning the individual gross and net with a level par final round in a very strong field with handicaps ranging from +3. Rick Valentine, director of golf at Loretto, said: “It was a fantastic way to start the season, rewarding the players for all the hard work through the winter. This new event is a great addition to our tournament schedule.”

SNAIL GIRL WINS PRIZE

Taunton school sixth-former Carly Brown has been awarded the Zoological Society of London’s prestigious Prince Philip Award and Marsh Prize. Members of the committee were unanimous in their decision that she was a deserving winner for her project: ‘Can the common garden snail see in colour?’ Carly’s 2,000-word study involved placing

snails in “choice chambers” into which coloured lights were shone and their movements were recorded. So can the common garden snail see in colour? Well, just over 50 percent moved towards red, prompting Carly to say: “There’s more work to do but there is obviously something they prefer about red light.” The Prince Philip Award and Marsh

Prize aims to encourage students to see biology as a relevant and exciting field of study and to make the step from learning to investigation. Carly will be presented with her award at a ceremony at the Zoological Society of London, Regent’s Park in June.
