Starting their working life as a professionally registered technician will give students the boost their career needs, and demonstrate to employers that they have experience, drive and commitment. Students will have the confidence that their skills and expertise have been independently assessed against a recognised standard and they will be entitled to use the designatory letters EngTech or ICTTech.

ICTTech

ICT technicians are professionals who support or facilitate the use of ICT equipment and applications by other users. They work in areas such as ICT business solutions, software, hardware, service or system operation/installation/support, IT administration, security, fault diagnosis and fixing.

EngTech

Engineering technicians solve practical engineering problems – contributing to the design, development, manufacture, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, processes or services. They are professionals with supervisory or technical responsibility and apply safe systems of working.

Registration for HE Technician staff

Professional registration establishes that your workforce has the right knowledge and the right experience. It is intended to ensure high standards, demonstrate transferable skills, up-to-date professional competence and continued professional development.

Your highly specialist and professional technical support team is critical to the provision of quality services for the university; they should therefore be given the opportunity to be recognised and valued for the work they do.

They will become role models for new staff joining the university and an ambassador contributing to improving the student professional development experience.

Our professional registration advisors will help your staff determine the right professional title according to their speciality and assist them through the registration process; mentors outside the workplace will help identify professional development opportunities.

The IET is working with HEaTED to provide support to your technical staff with their professional development and progress towards professional registration.

Support for internal technical apprentices

Growing your own talent through the provision of apprenticeships is an effective route to providing your skilled workforce of professional technicians; upon graduation your apprentices should be given the opportunity to be recognised and valued for their ability to perform vital roles for the university.

The IET has a dedicated membership programme for apprentices and technicians – IET Signature. It offers targeted support to move them towards professional success and delivers the information, tools and support apprentices and technicians have identified they need to succeed, all within a highly relevant sector specific framework.

The IET is dedicated to supporting the professional development of engineering and technology apprentices and technical staff in Higher Education.
