news BASF sells two additives businesses
BASF has announced that it is selling off two of its plastics additives businesses: its liquid masterbatch business is being acquired by Audia, while its PolyAd Services subsidiary is being sold to Edgewater Capital Partners. The sale of the liquid
masterbatch business, which is based in Clermont de l’Oise, France, is expected to be completed in mid-2014. Audia already owns the masterbatch producer Uniform Color, as well as the polyolefins compounder Washington Penn Plastic and the resin distribu- tor Southern Polymer. Audia described the acquisi- tion of the liquid masterbatch
Ravago buys Chinese compounder
Ravago has acquired Lomold’s compounding facility in Huzhou, China. The deal includes Huzhou Lomold High-Technology Environmental Plastics and Lomold Composite Solu- tions. These were formed by Lomold of South Africa to produce LFTs, as used in its pallets made by low-pres- sure moulding. Theo Roussis, CEO-
President of Ravago, said: “We know the Lomold teams well and given their excellent knowledge and experience of the Chinese market, their local exper- tise will result in a strong fit to Ravago’s global reach.”

business as “very strategic” and representing “an exciting expansion in technology, markets, and geography”. Uniform Color currently operates masterbatch plants in the USA, Mexico and Slovakia. BASF said that it regards liquid masterbatches as a niche part of its business and that it plans to concentrate on solid and powder master- batches, which it produces in Cologne, Germany.
BASF has also signed an
agreement to divest PolyAd Services to Edgewater Capital Partners, a private equity firm based in Cleveland, Ohio. The transaction is expected be completed in the second
quarter of 2014. PolyAd Services is a
stand-alone global business that provides specialty blends and services to solve additive incorporation problems for the plastics compounding and converting industry. It serves a wide range of plastics applications in industries such as automotive, construction, packaging and electronics. BASF said that PolyAd
Services had grown over the past few years, but it is a niche business that offers a limited channel to market for its product portfolio. “With the sale of PolyAd Services, our Plastic Additives business will focus even more on our core
business areas, light stabiliz- ers, antioxidants and Customer Specific Blends (CSBs),” said Diego Lopez, BASF’s senior vice president, Performance Chemicals North America. PolyAd Services has offices in Germany and the USA, and it was previously part of Ciba, which BASF acquired in 2010. The company produces 100% active blends of different additives such as antioxidants, stabilizers, flame retardants, lubricants, nucleators, slip agents, anti-blocks, clarifiers and slip agents. ❙

Nexam and BASF move ahead with crosslinkable PA 66
Nexam and BASF have developed a new crosslinkable polyamide 66 and have now agreed to commercialise this compound. The initial target application areas are in the automotive and electrical & electronics sectors. Nexam has awarded BASF
limited market exclusivity for approximately two years for a compound consisting of PA 66 and Nexam’s crosslinker. The exclusivity is conditional upon minimum purchases of Nexam’s crosslinker by BASF. These equate to sales of approximately SEK 10 million (€1.1 million) for the first 15 month period and SEK 50 (€5.7 million) for the following 12 month period, based on today’s prices.

commercial operation. We are satisfied to see that our cooperation with BASF now starts to bear fruit,” said Per Palmqvist Morin, CEO of Nexam. Nexam develops crosslinkers
Per Palmqvist Morin: “We now start to move from a development company into commercial operation”
“This agreement is an
important stepping stone for Nexam. It clearly indicates that we now start to move from a development company into a
for polyamides, such as PA 6, PA 6,6, and other engineering plastics, including polycarbon- ate, polyimides, polyesters and aromatic polyetherketones. It says that it is currently cooperat- ing with more than 10 polyamide producers and users worldwide. The company is headquar-
tered in Sweden and operates a production plant in Scotland that it acquired in 2012 as part of its purchase of St Andrews ChemTech International. ❙
