Additives for PET | materials feature Formulating appearance

Product aesthetics take numerous forms, and while clarity is vital in many applications, some manufac- turers prefer different looks, especially those that appear soft and subtle, through use of materials that promote degrees of haze and translucence in fi lms.

One supplier of such additives is

A. Schulman. The company’s PolyBatch PT DUL masterbatch grades, primarily for biaxially oriented PET (BOPET) fi lms, can be tailored to produce varying degrees of haze and gloss in consumer packaging, laminates, adhesive fi lms, label stock and protective fi lms for electronic devices such as TV screens and computer monitors.

Chris Kerscher, marketing manager for masterbatches at Schulman, says that the additives promote internal light

refraction within the fi lms to produce desired effects. The company’s original product in the line was PT DUL 3040. It recently added a second grade, PT DUL 3055, a

matting agent masterbatch that uses light-scattering technology for high haze and low gloss in BOPET and monolayer fi lms. Kerscher says that the degree of matte appearance is determined by dosing level and fi lm thickness. The best matte surfaces, he reports, come when PT DUL 3055 is used in a skin layer with a minimum thickness of 2 microns.

“Design trends in consumer packag- ing include soft, natural-appearing articles,” Kerscher says. “These additives provide an alternative to a printed varnished look or embossing.” One common technique that blends product functionality with aesthetics is amber packaging, whether moulded, extruded or thermoformed. The amber colour, of course, provides an effective UV barrier and can, with the right

concentration and package design, enhance the appeal and shelf life of products. Among materials displayed by Sukano at K2013 last
