natural fi bre reinforced bioplastic in a second EU-spon- sored project called Bugworkers, which fi nishes in July. Bacteria fed with sugars derived from wheat straw are used to produce polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), while cellulose nanofi bres from the same residue are the key to providing the necessary rigidity of the material for the further application in white goods and electronic equipment. Wheat straw, which is an agro-industrial residue, can reduce signifi cantly the manufacturing cost of a biodegradable plastic, says Aimplas. Included in the project is the development of


cellulose whiskers and lignin nanofi bres by superfi cial enzymatic modifi cation methods that are intended to impart antimicrobial, fl ame retardant and self-assem- bly properties. Aimplas says that co-rotating twin-screw extrusion has been the technology of choice for the production of the various


bio-based compounds. Work has been carried out by Aimplas at pilot plant level and by BH Industries in Poland at an industrial scale.
