Compex who did not move over to Berstorff, and supplied spare parts for old machines, as well as occasional new machines. One of its customers was engineering plastics compounder Akro-Plastics, part of the Feddersen group. Feddersen then decided to put the production of the equipment on a fi rmer footing by establishing Feddem, and taking over those particular operations from Decroupet, whose main business is outside the plastics industry.


Elements of surprise Steer places a particular emphasis on the design of kneading blocks and the important role that they play in its compounding lines. The company’s global com- pounding technology head Robert Roden says that mixing attributes can be varied using typical Erd- menger-style two-lobe kneading blocks by varying the width and offset of the individual lobes; however, some degree of each of the mixing attributes of these elements is always present. Because of this, energy being consumed during mixing may not be delivering the desired response. Wide-lobed kneading blocks work well at providing a


high degree of shear, but some degree of kneading or distributive mixing is also occurring. Narrow-lobed elements are good for distributive mixing, but still possess some shearing effect. Reverse kneading blocks are effective at creating back-pressure to increase the degree of fi ll and residence time in a high mixing environment, but they also signifi cantly contribute to
