Land Near Museum Welcomes Families and Campers

The year saw positive movement in the development of unused land on the National Infantry Foundation’s 150-acre tract.

At the north end of the museum’s parking lot, Pezold Management built a new Hampton Inn on property purchased from the Founda- tion. The hotel’s 102 rooms are especially convenient for families attending graduations at the nearby parade field.

The hotel was built by Batson-Cook, the same company that built the National Infantry Museum. It was designed to complement the architectural style of the museum and to mirror some of the features of historic buildings on post.

The Foundation also created a primitive campsite north of the hotel for use by Scouts and re-enactment groups. More than 300 Boy Scouts from the region were the first to use the site for their annual Duty to God and Country Retreat in September.

Silver Dollar Honors Soldiers, Supports Museum

The United States Mint sold more than 205,400 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollars during the ten months the limited edition coin

was available in 2012. As authorized by Congress, the National Infantry Foundation received $10 for each coin sold. The total of $2,051,400 paid to the Foundation was used to help reduce museum construction debt.

It took six years of lobbying, Congressional approval, a signature by the President and design work by the United States Mint to bring the 2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar to life. Only two such commemorative coins are minted each year.

The coin was a unique and popular gift for new Soldiers, veterans, retirees and museum supporters. The 2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar is now a collector’s piece and can be purchased only on the resale market.
