Up Front LOW

At just 5-foot-6, and barely cracking triple digits in weight, 15-year-old Wesley Low Jr. certainly isn’t bowling’s most im- posing fi gure.

But that hasn’t prevented the

left-handed two-hander from making a big impact.

It’s offi cial. It’s Miller Time! MillerCoors, the second-largest beer company in the United States, recently

renewed its long affiliation with bowling by inking a two-year deal with Strike Ten Entertainment, the marketing and sponsorship arm of bowling, to position its Miller High Life brand as the “Official Beer of Bowling.” Both Miller High Life and Miller Lite had been official beers in the past. According to STE, MillerCoors’ partnership with bowling will include special-

ized point-of-sale glassware, pitchers and buckets, as well as sponsorship of several “marquee bowling industry events, trade shows and conferences.”

Low, 29 days short of his 16th birthday, made history (sort of) when he won a PBA Regional tournament, April 4, in Las Vegas. Low, of Palmdale, Calif., was nearly per- fect in winning the PBA Non-Champion West tournament at South Point Bowling Center, topping Deeronn Booker, 299-234, in the fi nal match. Low left an 8 pin on his fi nal shot.

Low became the youngest bowler ever to win a PBA Regional event, eclipsing the record set by then-17-year-old Pete Weber in 1979 at the PBA Midwest Regional in St. Louis.

Because he is not a PBA member

(which would cost Low his amateur status and would aff ect scholarships and colle- giate bowling), Low does not get credit for a PBA title. Weber was a PBA member at the time of his victory. Low, who is a mem- ber of Junior Team USA, had his $1,500 top prize funneled into his USBC SMART scholarship fund.
