SERVE

Tony and Mary Jane Link have lived in the Cataula area for nearly three decades, which is plenty of time to have seen an explosion of growth in southern Harris County. It’s also plenty of time to see the challenges the county faces as it attempts to manage that growth.

Few organizations face a harder job than Cataula Volunteer Fire Rescue, which is tasked with covering more than 2,500 homes across a 90-square-mile area — sometimes on a shoestring budget, says Chief Bill Czukor. “Funding is still scarce — we don’t receive that much from the county, and it takes grants like this to be able to afford things that make our jobs safer and easier.”

So the Links came to the rescuers’ rescue. When the firefighters applied for a grant, the Hollis/Link Fund at the Community Foundation provided resources to purchase a set of MSA Altair multi-gas detectors. The detectors protect homeowners by providing

a highly accurate measurement of carbon monoxide and other harmful gases; they create safer conditions for firefighters as well. “After a structure fire, we use them to determine at what point we can take our air packs off, so we can go in and work without needing tank air,” Czukor explains.

Tony and Mary Jane Link moved a family foundation to the Community Foundation, and Tony now serves on the CFCV board. The Links are happy to be able to use their Donor Advised Fund to support a worthy group of individuals. “In Columbus, you have the fire department that’s supported with tax dollars,” Tony explains. “This group out here, though, are exactly what they are: volunteers, who give a lot of their time and energy and put themselves on the line to protect and serve this community. We recognized that from the beginning, and we want to help.”

Community Development & Enrichment grants totaled $1,253,174 and included support for the Victory Drive/I-185 Interchange Project via the Gateways Foundation, the Raising the Wolf Fund Drive for Harris County’s Humane Society, office expenses for the Coalition for Sound Growth and tickets for Columbus Young Professionals for the Jim Blanchard Leadership Seminar. Above, Bill Czukor demonstrates the gas detectors for the Links.
