T
o achieve greatness: start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.
— Arthur Ashe
The charitable world is filled with words that convey great oversight and responsibility: grant application, project budget, final report. That is as it should be; those terms structure the oversight and transparency that help contributors become more informed about community needs and how charities work to meet them.
But underlying those semantics is an even more important word: love. The Community Foundation’s core purpose, philanthropy, means love of mankind. We take very seriously our goal of fostering that love and creating raging philanthropists.
This year 338 contributors made gifts totaling $10,187,380 to our 196 funds (17 of them new funds this year). Those same funds made 1,411 grants totaling $7,060,528 to 505 different charitable efforts. Since our beginning nearly 15 years ago, we have received contributions of more than $137 million and have granted out more than $58 million ... but, rather than the expected $79 million, we still have assets of $93 million with which to serve our community.
Our annual report looks at stories behind that giving in each of our seven grantmaking areas. How do members of our community focus their generosity on specific needs? How does the Community Foundation make their work easier? How did their generosity make a difference?
Whether givers are motivated by our administrative offerings, tax advantages, confidence in our investments, the opportunity to protect their privacy, or a desire to leave a legacy (or, like most of our donors, “all of the above”) our work helps our donors express love for their communities in ways that are easy, flexible and effective.
For the board and staff of this busy but passionate organization, For Good. Forever. is more than a tag line. It’s a particular portion of the language of giving that’s just why we’re here.
